Peanut Butter Ham

Peanut Butter Ham

This recipe has a funny story behind it......the peanut butter glaze came from my cooking days in the U.S.Navy. One year I decided to buy a ham and do the peanut butter glaze for the family for the first time. Well, slowe's Dad just had a hissy fit. HE certainly was not going to eat any $40 ham that had PEANUT BUTTER on it...what kind of fool would do that do a ham....on and on and on........Well, time came for dinner and would you believe the glaze was GREAT! A new Christmas tradition was born that continues to the present day....many of the kid's friends were introduced to it as well! We took the leftovers home and made ham croquettes.....but that is another recipe, and another story!

After the ham is cooked (bone in is the ONLY ham for me) we have had good luck with the Farmer John, John Morrell, Safeway Ashley Farms, Cooks, and Costco's Kirkland brand). ..remove from oven, and trim excess fat. Score top about 1/4" deep in a diamond pattern. Make the glaze....2 parts peanut butter and 1 part Karo Syrup. Heat in microwave for 30-45 seconds. Spread over top of ham. Bake at 400 for 15-20 minutes, until well browned. YUM!

Note: I prefer the crunchy peanut butter. Light or Dark Karo syrup is fine, and I have even used maple syrup in a pinch when we were out of the other! It's all good!

this recipe sounds interesting. I'm not a fan of peanut butter, I prefer a brown sugar, pineapple glaze myself.....

As a non-cook who does like to fry ham steaks once in a while, I've found that you can make a ham glaze out of just about anything sweet in the refrigerate and they all taste good. My favorite is pineapple jam second to orange marmalade.

Rolly-- That sounds delicious & I have all of the ingredients! I'm not able to mess with a turkey this year - & we had decided on a ham...so your receipe will be our main dish!

Thanks for sharing. Besides: how could a Navy cook go wrong?
