Karen,

I found walking across the pool with a flotation device very helpful. It was much easier to walk in water up to my neck -- more support. At least try a little deeper. It you first walk across the pool you are at the same height of water all the time. Plain ole walking requires less correlated movement than swimming and may be an easier place to start.

I sure will give that a try .... if I have difficulty walking on dry land why did I envision water to be the bees knees. I love the coolness of the water and I do have to admit I love new challenges and each thing I can gain back is a real blessing. Thanks Karen

Don't give up so quickly! I find that my arm is easier to move when it's under water. Regardless, I'm glad you gave it a try!

Give up? Who me? Neva!!!!! If i drown I will have to reconsider other than that its me and my new noodles. I shall keep you informed HA Karen

Karen,

Yes walking in water that is up to your neck is best. You have great posture and the leg is able to move much more easily. I use a flotation belt on William.

I used to use a noodle under his arms. But, that was only for psychological help. He has great balance and walks well. In shallow water he has a tendency to slump.

Keep up the water. We love it and it has helped tremendously.

good job karen, you go girl. im sure it will get easier each time you do it. i hear water therapy is the best. i have a pool but im not able to utilize it, my family thinks i could not get out, no handrail. they think the force of the water would prevent me from lifting my legs up on each step. you don't know unless you try. apparently they are not willing to help me try. now with summer almost over here, maybe next year! i know i can get in by falling or sliding in from the side,LOL oh well maybe they know better than i. keep trying karen and enjoy.

Stessie: When I first stroked and found out I couldn't swim, I was shocked and very sad. I was almost obsessed with finding out how this could be accomplished. My therapist and neurologist said it was because of lack of coordination and balance. I enjoy walking and exercising in the water as I can walk easily, not like on land. I have gradually come to the acceptance of floating with noodles or whatever works. We put rails at our steps at the pool so I can get in and out.

I tend to get sad (depressed??) and anxious for no particular reason and still have crying bouts but not as often as in the beginning. I am working with therapists on that TOO.

There is so much to face after stroke but I have to remember that I am alive and all I can do is the best I can. God is always with me. Leah

God is always with us Leah His desire is to prosper us. Ask for what we want. I have asked to swim. Some may think well now is that a good enough reason to bother God To me yes it is. Karen
