I remember coming home from rehab and no one was here during the day. I was alone and afraid. What happens if I fall? get a telephone call?Someone at the door? have a siezure? I went on the internet and found strokenetworkI couldn't figure out the chat thing but I could read about other people in my situation, and actually started feeling a little less afraid and glad that I was not as bad off as others or that there were positive possibilities in the future. I want desperately to start a stroke group in my area. I think I am ready but need so much help and so far all I get is "good for you" but not what I need like a moderator and a venue...Yikes..Heather

You could start with your local hospital and then branch out on your own. A local community centre here has a Carers group that meets once a month, an hour in the centre and then an hour over lunch at a local cafe.

Or you could just start with a group at your local church as most churches have rooms to let out rent free. If you don't have a church contact the local Salvation Army, they are always there to help those who are reaching out to others.

Good luck with it all.

Sue.

I have tried all those avenues and that is why I am trying to start one,on my own. The churches charge rent here.the YMCA offered to support it as part of their"Heart Healthy Program but participants would have to join the Yand it is $57.00 a month. I can't afford that... So I keep plugging along

Hi - I am new to this site and caregiving (for my Mom). But I was wondering if you've checked craigslist.org ? look for your city and then there is a "community" and "groups" section. Maybe you could post there or find something in the listings? It's free so it's worth a shot maybe? Take care, Joy in Sacramento

Be careful, though...on Craigslist that is... There are lots of scams on there because it is free. I know I suggested it...but that's only because I do know that there are some legitimate things on there. Also, here in Sacramento, the community center holds meetings for groups and also there are a couple of neighborhood service centers that the police usually have things going on but I know they have some other types of meetings there (I had a neighborhood watch meeting there), for either free or low cost.
