Larry's therapy and doctor appointments

It seems these last couple of weeks have kept us busy running to appointments. We went to see the vascular surgeon for Larry's 6 month carotid dopplar test. The right artery actually showed improvement this time. The left is completely blocked so we don't worry about it. The doctor also wanted Larry to have an X-Ray on his legs since he had the blood clot last year. We went back yesterday for that and so far we haven't heard from the doctor, but the tech said she thought it looked good. One thing that upset me yesterday when I was dropping Larry at the door, a small van was parked in front so I waited and finally went around to let Larry out. The van still sat there and I was blocked in. I finally honked my horn and motioned for her to MOVE. She did but didn't like it. It is not a place to park, just drop off lady!

Last month Larry had more Botox and received a script for more OT & PT. I am pleased with the therapies this time. The PT was mostly reviewing what Larry was weak on and showed us another machine to use. He also was given some exercises to increase his strength on getting up from a sitting position. (I need that too I think). The OT has been using the Bioness on Larry's hand. Since his hand is more relaxed from the Botox, this makes it easier. Today he was given small pegs to lift out of their holes and was able to do most of them with help from the Bioness machine. He had to work very hard at this. I was surprised when the OT said another OT he had was going to measure his hand for the Saeboflex. This is like a splint, but attaches to the hands and fingers but uses no electric current. It is suppose to help keep his hand open. First we have to see if it will work on Larry. I hope it does.

Friday we go for a sleep study at the hospital. I guess I will go along and spend the night. Such fun. I will let you know how that goes. I'm pretty sure he has sleep apnea.

The weather is nice lately with cooler temps and some more rain. The lawn is actually a little greener.

Julie,

Share the new exercises. I could use some to get some strength in getting up and down.

I am glad that things are coming along.

I need to make an appt and get some more PT scheduled for Wm.

Ruth, the exercises were ones you may be familiar with. I don't know why the PT's did not show these before. One is standing against the wall. Lower your body slowly to count of 3 and pause each time. You don't have to go down too far. The other is getting up: slowly get up part way, pause, up a little more, pause, etc. I thought Larry did well in those at therapy. Who knows what he will do at home. LOL

Julie: our Clinic is the same. But the paid services often just leave their rigs and the rest of us have to push uphill to get our people there. Someone woke the guards up and they now patrol. Much better.

Good luck on Friday. Wish I could send you this nice Connecticut Savignon Bruce just purchased. Very good, but a nice glass of wine with your book would make the night pass quicker. If you have books on tape or your Ipod, with ear plugs, you may also want to take that.

Good news so far on the clot and maybe you can get a week off. I want to check on Chris tomorrow and Thursday, but told Bruce Friday night was an off night. Carl may stop in but that is always a short visit and Saturday morning it is sleep in. Take care, Debbie

Julie, We have a separate part of the street for those kinds of vans at out clinic.

Good for Larry on the progress for his hand. Larry's new exercises may spark him to do them at home more often.

Has Larry ever smoked?

At one point I thought Carl should take a sleep apnea test, for he would stop breathing for 15 seconds every now and then threw the night. Instead the doc sent him for a breathing test and it was all due to him smoking for 40 years but had stopped. Carl stopped smoking 6 years ago. He has no signs of those problems any longer.

Julie, rejoice in every little bit of improvement and build on it at home as much as you can.

I don't have to worry about standing Ray up now as he is either in a wheelchair or on the bed now when I visit. I have seen him walk, not a pretty sight, a few steps, paused, urged on, a few steps, wobble and turn for his chair. So keep Larry on his feet as long as you are able to.

The left carotid is blocked but all the doctors and surgeons say they do not touch it. In other words, nothing to be done. Hopefully, all the other small arteries and right carotid get enough flow to the brain. We can only do what the experts tell us. Also, this is why we have the right artery X-Rayed every 6 mo.

Julie: Bruce's Left carotid is also totally blocked. That is the stroke. Neuro explained it as once the main artery is blocked, removal of the block is certain death, because it will cause a rush of blood back to the brain which now can not handle it. All the smaller arteries behind it are shut down and dead.

Like you, we focus on the healthy right side. Bruce had to have the endarterectomy as his right was 80% blocked and at that point, since it was still operating, needed to be opened up. Larry is fortunate in that his is lesser blocked and also improving.

Luck tomorrow. And Saturday is for rest and sleep. Let us know. Debbie
