2nd Stroke Anniversary for Larry tomorrow

We went to another Stroke/caregiver Support Meeting today. As there were new people, the host asked the survivors to say what was new. When she got to Larry, he didn't have much to say at first. The 2nd person, age 54, had an anuerism and stroke in 2008. She had a lot to say - divorced, lost her job, insurance, and was now applying for disability. She didn't seem to have many visible deficits but had trouble holding a job due to eyesight, etc. Another lady was still a patient there, and while she had a little trouble with her speech clarity, we found out she had just had the stroke in January. Everyone was amazed to see her sitting there recovering so quickly. The lady sitting next to me said she had only been married for 8 months when her hubby at his stroke, and had retired shortly before that. When I announced Larry had an anniversary and I asked him to tell them, everyone applauded. Larry finally opened up and told them about his stroke. I wanted him to talk and not talk for him. This was good for Larry as he saw others, including another gentlemen his age, who had a similar stroke. We won't be doing any celebrating much, but will go to church and thank the good Lord that Larry is still here. Maybe I can get Larry to go out tomorrow for lunch.

I have been going through photos from years back for Larry's album and for his son's 40th BD. Larry's son's wife is putting a slide show together for his BD in March (St. Patrick's Day). As I was going through the photos of vacations and holidays Larry and I took, it really got to me. I saw how happy we were and the happy expression on Larry's face. The tears came for a while as I realized those days are gone. At least we have the memories.

The weather here has been mild with two record breaking days in 60's. Today it is dreary and raining all day.

Julie: Congratulations to you and Larry on the two year. Amazing recovery and both of you working at it so hard.

I agree with you that it was probably a good way to honor the anniversary and let him see that while the last two years have been difficult, there are others in the same situation.

Very difficult when dealing with our pasts. I am good for about an hour and then just can't do any more. Have to get back to reality.

That is really a nice gift for Larry's son. What a great thought! And Larry gets to contribute and make suggestions. Plus a good project on a dreary day.

Again congratulations! Debbie

Julie:

congratulations to you & larry. first few years are the hardest, but it does become easier. once you start celebrating it, that particular mile stone don't feel bad at all.
