Nice weekend but ending some scary stuff

My daughter came in town last weekend as she had President's Day off. Last week I had a carpenter here who tore out a wet bar we never used and installed a cabinet and shelves. He also did some other repairs. My daughter likes to paint but I don't think she knew how much was involved in this project. I helped where I was told I could, being the most helpless at painting, and we got through it.

Larry had even agreed readily to go out to eat. This is something he usually fights, but not when my daughter is here. lol She sat next to him at the restaurant, and, read the whole menu off before he decided on something. The place was crowded due to mild weather and a long holiday weekend. Larry's son was to come Sunday with his wife and our granddaughter but had to cancel due to little Rachel being sick.

Monday night after Larry was in bed for the night, I heard a crash like the wall coming down. I ran into the bedroom and found my "lingerie chest" lying across the floor and Larry lying nearby. This scared me as this was the first "hard fall" he has had since the stroke. (He slipped a couple times but once against the sofa and once in the bathroom where I caught him both times.) This time he said he lost his balance coming back from moving the clock so he could see it better! I checked to see if he was hurt and he said "no". He never has walked that far from bed at night. I tried to move him to a position where he could pull up on the bed but no go. I finally called the neighbor and he and I lifted him in 20 seconds. Larry had a little nick on his hand, and my chest, I use partly for jewelry, had earrings and necklaces all entwined and wall had a couple nicks. All in all we were lucky. He wears the CPap and is constantly watching the clock so he can remove it after 3-4hrs! He can't sleep with it and even Ambien is not helping!

Yesterday I took Larry to an endocrinoligist referred by his internist. As you may know by my posts, I can't get Larry to gain weight. In fact, he just loses weight and not much of an appetite. His blood test all show normal but this Dr. came up with yet another called "cortisol stimulation test". We have to go back to the hospital for this one! We talked to the nutritionist on staff there and she more or less suggested he load up on things like sugar on cereal, whole milk instead of 2%, Carnation Instant Breakfast, ice cream, shakes, even gravey. The problem is getting Larry to eat as he is very choosey to say the least. The Dr. said he definitely needs to increase his calorie intake. We will see how this goes. He didn't seem to have a magic answer, just more tests to rule out anything else.

The temperatures have been warm this week and 64 today. I'm taking Larry along for several errands. He can sit in the car or whatever while I do my running. Maybe I can talk him into a McDonald's cheeseburger and shake!

Julie, Falls are one of the scariest things that we deal with. We have always been fortunate that nothing serious has been broken. I found myself watching 24 hours a day to keep Dick from going down. That only kept me from sleeping not him from falling. I had to get to the point where I stopped (as much as possible) worrying about possible falls. I slept better and Dick explored more. So the good part of this is that Larry walked further! It was a stretch for him but hopefully the fall will not discourage him from trying new things. I did start putting sturdier furniture around Dick's zone!

I do hope that you are able to get that cheeseburger and shake! Enjoy the wonderful weather, Ruth

Julie: now the big first one is behind you. Bruce was just home from rehab, in those grippy sox, and went head first out of his WC. He probably needed stitches, but I literally pulled him on an afghan over to his recliner where we inched him up the foot rest and I was able to tend to his face cut. Plus the aspirin therapy, they clot over so slowly.

Good news is you never forget it and spend some time reviewing new safety strategies. Obviously Bruce will never wear grippy sox again. He can now slide into his mocs-mostly for a quick transfer and shoes and brace go on before we do any walking.

I agree with Ruth-a learning experience. Bruce fell with Leo just Monday night. But they were able to get Bruce up and just keep moving. They do learn to put themselves down as safely as they can with good equipment and sturdy furniture in their paths. Bruce's big problem is the BR, but there are grip bars all over on his strong side for all transfers, and he knows to grab one and just sit down.

I am so thankful Larry was not hurt seriously and other than the aches and muscle pains, seems to have not held him down. He was out and about. Best thing about a learning experience is that once we catch our breaths and slow our heart rates down, and he was not injured seriously, we can take time to review and reorganize. Best, Debbie

Julie,

How scary. It is good that Larry did not hurt himself.

I do hope that you had a good lunch or snack to McDonalds.

I cannot imagine why Larry cannot gain any weight.

I do hope that you enjoy the stuff that the carpenter did.

take care.

Ruth
