Chat: Wow, that was weird

I apologize to all in Caregiver Chat tonight for the hasty retreat. I heard something from the bedroom, knew Bruce was having trouble settling-will get to that, and there he is, sitting in his WC! This is scary on so many levels.

First off he transferred in sox, was actually trying to slide into his mocs. What I heard was him dropping them to the floor to get them off the WC. I leave everything set up for early am transfer. Also he had taken his 7pm meds, one of which causes drowsiness. He could not explain what, if anything, was wrong - he's medicated and tired. Probably had an hour nap, woke up and somehow thought he should get up. He has a clock, but gets up in the dark and goes to bed in the light, so maybe just thought it was morning and he was late. He knows he has MD appointment in the am. Took him about a half hour to recenter, knew he wasn't getting control of the TV out here and just took his 10pm meds and I transferred him back to bed. I also thought with all the cleaning the caregivers do, maybe the "firmness" on his side of the mattress got altered. But it was OK. Poor Kira is totally confused - LOL.

Now, the good part of all of this, is that he transferred himself. Not safely, but no harm, no foul. I have noticed subtle differences the past couple of weeks. Hate to put too much weight on it, because it will not hold. But I am missing more, due to work issues, and just maybe he is finally realizing that sitting in that WC all day, waiting for me to get home, is not enough. He said to me this morning, "then you will be home." I said, there are a lot of things you can do until I get home and he smiled and said "I know." His stock answer to everything. But then said "I'd like Cathryn to take me out on the deck to work on my flower boxes." Well, just pick me up! And he did it.

My sister, Mary Beth, spent the day in the walk-in Clinic and then her Doctor. She has a lump and it looks like surgery will be required. I was on the phone with her most of the day and of course, Bruce knows all this. He also understands my helplessness. I should be there, can't be and Mary will get almost no support from her family-very dysfunctional. In the middle of all of this, Bruce needs shower and shave. I had prepped dinner in the crock pot this morning, so that was ready to go.

So to everyone in Chat, I am sorry. We were having such great discussions and after the day I had, was so looking forward to it. Finally temperature outside is equal to temperature inside, so AC off and windows open. This morning it was 61 degrees and much less humid. Won't be quite that nice tonight, but anything below 77 degrees is OK in my book.

Debbie, I left last night in chat before you. Larry was calling for me just as Ruth left. He went to bed a little earlier. That Bruce - scary but good that he was able to do it safely. Just like Larry when I left him and he opened the door to the repairman and then put Lucy in bedroom.

I hope Mary's surgery will be minor and her recovery quick. She knows you would be there for her and is supportive as best you can be.

Larry to be discharged from PT today. I'll let you know.

I know the feeling. Now Bob CAN'T get up from bed, or out of his wheelchair. So I know he is safe, like it or not. But (hopefully) he will be able to do those things, which is great, but opens a whole new can of worms and dangers.
