MRI / CAT SCAN COST

SandyCaregiver

Most probably a neurologist will want to take new mri/cat scans of hubby's brain. Since one of the insurances I'm looking at is high deductible, does any one know just what an MRI and a catscan cost, so I could figure out what 20% of that would be.

that was about right for my CAT but it was around 10,000 for my last MRI but that was brain and spinal to dx Multiple Sclerosis. I think it was more expensive than the head only and with or without dye. In other words. I don't know for sure.

All I know is they are expensive and MRI cost the most and is the biggest reason Cat scans are first ordered because some insurances won't pay at all!

If a hospital has run into problems getting insurance to pay they flat won't do an MRI unless you got co-insurance too!! And that's my case I got two insurances so I never have a copay problem thank God or I would be a lost soul all the times I had to get an MRI to be absolutely sure!!

Thanks everyone for giving your info. If a catscan was $600... then if I choose the one insurance, 20% of that would be $120... I could probably handle that. Our probably wouldn't be the $10,000, which would sink us.

if you explain to the nuerologist your predicament then he/she might opt not to think it as vital.. dan has gotten subsequent CT scans since the seizures started but in all honesty they were not all that necessary ( for dan anyways) talk to the nuerologist and they will be pretty honest with you about how absolutley necessary it is... nancyl

Sandy: Bruce has not had one since 6 month follow up. Nothing since then. I am sure that was just to insure that the swelling was resolved. Not much to tell us after that. What was dead was dead, what was not will do whatever it can. And apparently there was no change in the original damage. And really, there is no way to tell what was still functioning or maybe functioning would pick up any extra work. But this is my thinking. I will ask Neuro on next visit.

His Carotid clearing is checked every six months with ultrasound and really that is now the issue. The Left side is basically dead, keep the Right side at 90% and we are happy campers.

If Neuro does not push for MRI or CT, probably Bob doesn't need it. Go with the Pro. Debbie

sandy --- although dan has had 2 post stroke ct scans bothe were for the seizures and i actually opted out of the last one - it was offered after the last seizure as well but as debbie said not much change to be expected...i opted out because it is an expence for the ins company - not for us and a needless expence is needless regardless of who is picking up the bill- in our case we wouldnt even have to pay anything... but if there is even the slightest of difference for dan in cognition or whatever i would not hesitate to have one done.. just to see what is going on... but for a reg. appt i wouldnt stress about it, as deb says go with the pro.... nancyl

The records that I sent for to show the neurologist mention 'white matter disease' and it is something I'm trying not to think about, as I have enough to worry about, and nothing I can do about it anyway. I just don't know what will happen when we finally make it to a neurologist, he only got the point where I could get him out in Aug, and now I'm waiting on insurance. Also, I FINALLY found a neurologist that treats strokes in my area.
