Best shop to date

It has been an interesting two weeks, post wedding. Mary called Friday night, just for a chat and mentioned that just two weeks earlier, we were all on cloud nine!

We lost my Mom on December 17 and Bruce's December 24, so this is always a bittersweet time of year. We talked in Chat about downsizing the holiday work: decorations, cards, cooking, baking. Most have families that balk at changing the traditions. But with some discussion, families either adjust or jump in to help out.

We here in North Haven have "minimalist". Bruce says it is OK, but sometimes I wonder if he is just worried about upsetting me.

It took four days to recover from the wedding, plus I had to do two extra shifts to make up my time from the week before the wedding. And not 24 hours goes by, Newtown. That seemed to just send me into a tailspin. Too many emotional ups and downs. Fortunately we go to a friend's for Christmas Eve. Christmas Day will just be Bruce and I, but I do want to do a nice meal.

So it was off to the grocery store today. Now we haven't been in two weeks, so it was a big shop. Plus I wanted to try a new antipasto recipe that was shared with me. The store has recently remodeled and we are still getting used to it. I think every shopper in town was in the store and they brought their spouses! The non-shoppers are always a problem, even on a good day. Stand in aisles, offering suggestions - trying to help out, getting the looks - LOL. Wandering about, no clue. But they probably have something to say about the woman who brings the guy in the WC and makes him push the cart while she pushes him! So irresponsible - LOL. Quite a few recognize us, of course and we have some laughs.

Bruce and I spent a long time on the list, matching up coupons, getting deals. Especially the buy one, get one free meats. That happens so rarely and we do try to stock up. This week they offered ham steaks, Kielbasa and chicken. His favorite lamb chops (Australian) were 99 cents a pound. That happens twice a year, so that will be our Christmas dinner.

Bruce has taken it one step further. He combined cheese, A-one steak sauce and Planter's nuts to get $5.00 back from Kraft. Plus the nuts were $2.00 off on sale and he had a coupon for all three that we purchased. Same thing with the steak sauce that Bruce uses all the time when he marinates his beef. He found a coupon for most of the antipasto ingredients - now guaranteed they were all brand names, but the antipasto was wonderful and I think I would have bought the better brands anyway, since I was trying a new recipe.

So our biggest trip to date. I want you to know it took almost two hours to prep the list and another 2 1/2 at the store. I am going to figure 45 minutes of that was figuring out where stuff was now and getting around the "I have no clue why I am here" people. Just want everyone to know this is not an easy task. But $280.00 in groceries that we paid $181.00 including tax. You rock Bruce!

Happy Holidays to all. We are still hoping for a white one here in Connecticut. Debbie

Still getting over Australian Lamb Chops at 99 cents a pound! We must be giving them away and charging the home team double! I would have paid $6.99 a kilo (2.2 pounds) so enjiy, you got a real bargain. Just love the way Bruce bargain shops, a saving of $100 is remarkable. You have done so well Mrs Sparks, two weeks a bride and so proficient.

0h for those not shopping to please leave the building. School holidays, Christmas Day means the stores closed tomorrow = complete chaos.

Wow. That's a lot of time shopping! Great savings, though! It's great that Bruce has discovered a way to be such a good contributor to your household needs.

Losing our loved ones at any time is so hard. It always seems to add another measure of pain when it happens during the holidays. The joy of the holiday seems so out of sorts with the feeling of loss. In time, I suppose we learn to hold the two together and remember our loved ones while still experiencing the season with anticipation and joy. A very dear friend of mine died in early December as a result of multiple myeloma. She was only 58. All this season I have remembered that she so wanted to live, to experience life with fullness. As a way of honoring her and her desire for life, this year I have claimed the Christmas season with joy in spite of the pain of my own situation and the loss I feel without my friend because I don't want to waste one day of life. It is working for me this year; another year might be a different story!

You now have added reason to rejoice in the holiday season! I think all of us on this site celebrated your wedding with you. You have gone through so much to get to this point. I wish you a very merry Christmas!

Hey the time you spent on the grocery procurement netted you $22 per hour, I'd like to get a part time job that pays that! Such a rush to get the big savings, congratulations. Enjoy your antipasto, we'll be having the same around noon tomorrow. Ray's Mom's recipe, not allowed to change a thing even though she's been gone since 1985.

According to the weather man this morning a white Christmas is headed your way so your "hope" is for sure unless they don't know what they are talking about!!

Four days to recover from the wedding??? Damn, I bet Bruce is glad he got a WC and don't have to walk around in the house?? He needs his rest!!! Just kidding you all!!!

My wife does that coupon thing I just pay the cost and go!! It may take some time to learn where things are in the store now!!! That was quick to be back up and running if the store was affected by Sandy??

Merry Christmas and congrats on the wedding again!!!

Debbie I'm glad you are back on board and blogging about your constant activities with Bruce. I have been to the grocery store at least 5 times in the past week. I could have used the coupons! I agree, you see people who seem to be lost or look like this is a new experience for them around the holidays. lol

It looks like a storm is heading our way and yours. Darn it if it isn't coming Christmas Day and into the next day here. I have to get my daughter back to the airport Wednesday and we may get 6 inches.

So happy the antipasto was a hit. We have just been hanging out here at home, wrapping presents and watching movies on TV. I tried to get the movie "Christmas in Connecticut" but it didn't come in time. lol

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

.I save my coupons, then go to the store snd forget the couponsLOL.

We will not have snow, live in central Florida, if it snows here, then yes the world is ending!

Iam cooking a roast, with some pototoes, and veg, going small after the huge meal for Thangsgiving. My poor husband is in shock, he comes from a large family, and keeps on telling me we need more dishes. No!

Have an enjoyable Christmas, and a Happy New Year

Yvonne: I was in Daytona Beach 25 years ago in March. It was snowing when the plane landed. It is rare, but not unheard of. Of course I was packed for late spring. My Mom had to drive to the mall so I could get a sweater and a pair of long pants - LOL. Then her heater was broken. I think that was the only time in her years living there that she even needed to turn it on - LOL.

Trick with the couponing is to prepare before you leave the house. This all started when Bruce refused to continue in therapies and then basically took to his WC. He is on an antidepressant and he had tried returning to work. When he saw the TV show and our circular comes with his paper on Thursday, he started circling things on sale that we use. Then he would take the Sunday coupon circulars and folding them back on the coupons he wanted me to cut out. I finally understood and have been helping him since. It is a project we can do together, plus it is something that he showed interest in when I was at my wit's end as to where we go from here. Now he circles the items with the extra gas points - last week we had earned $1.10 off a gallon.

Today the BJs coupon book arrived in the mail. He will work on that for days. That one he can fold back and tear because they are perf'd. We do a BJs run about once a month for the big stuff: Depends, paper goods, cat litter. So it is good for him. We go to the grocery most Sundays. Sometimes we only need milk and fresh produce, but it is one thing that he enjoys, contributes to and helps out. Debbie
