The Luau Half Hour

There was a luau luncheon with Decorations and pineapple cake. But the staff got catered food with real pieces of chicken wings while the resident plates had some chicken loaf stuff. I guess some cant deal with bones but I was drooling. I enjoyed watching some dancers, and the festive drink with an umbrella. We had plastic leis and I got three in pink, blue, and orange. I brought one for roomies but they declined them so I put them on my walker to decorate it. Well, while I picked at my food, they took down the decorations right after the dancers left. A staff asked me to watch her plate, which was much more appetizing. It had catered food. Real chicken wings and potato wedges. I wanted to trade.

They started taking down decorations and clearing away tables and it was done in half an hour.People wheeled back to their rooms.

The balloons were Taken down. Wow in less than an hour the party amazed and faded.

I cannot walk to the dining room now because my room is too far away so I asked for a wheelchair ride. I need a ride to the transportation van too. I did not bring my chair from home. But i cannot walk with my walker up the long steep wheelchair ramp. I use the office one but when I ask someone, they go hide. Eventually I get help even if from the transport guy who says he drives me so much he is my personal driver. He is always telling me : don't worry. I'm here.

And those are the best words.

I thanked one cna for helping me and she said she is not married and alone and childless and my age. She said if something happens to her then she is alone. We talked about the value of her job and homes for people.

I won snacks at bingo today so maybe no low blood sugar later on. I love winning popcorn and then someone pops it for me.

Hot popcorn with butter is my favorite. With my sweet tea I make bedside.

Anyway I am happy to visit with the other residents and I have settled into routine. I grieve my old life,my home, but I live in now, hoping I can have a small place again with help.someday.

I hated at the nursing home Ray was in that the "party" was over so quickly, especially the women seemed to feel it, for the men the food was gone the party was over. Yes, there has to be different levels of eating but the staff should know who can have whole foods and who cannot, bad planning really if you get meatloaf and you can eat chicken wings.

I am glad you have settled into a routine, it must be hard for you to make the transition I know it would be for me if I had to do the same.

I wish it was possible you could get a scooter or chair you could use long as needed while you are there.... I'm at home but need my scooter to get around outside and my cane for inside upstairs in the bedroom and downstairs too since my walking ability got worse a few months ago.........

I asked for a scooter from PT but I was told I cannot use one because of my visual problems related to dizziness, vertigo, double vision, nystagmous. So I would not be safe traveling alone or driving a scooter around. Most people do not understand my problems, look at me like I should be normal. Things that make problems for me include patterns, hallways, people moving around me,standing without holding on to something, open spaces, outdoors, busy streets,The cafeteria.

They leave me on my own because I have not fallen so they see me as capable. The world is now frightening, but they see it as anxiety.

I used to drive, explore, travel, swim in a lake at midnight. Now going out to a doc appt is scary adventure requiring assistance. But I love to see the sky, move in the car,be around people. Transition to understanding who I am when others have no comprehension of the world I live in now.
