Hand Splints
I went to OT and I will be going back 6 times to begin with. My stroke hand the right side,is cold but numb,no pain, full movement.
The problem is the left hand. I walk with the walker and put weight on it. My thumb joint and tendon that runs down is swollen. So I will be getting hand splints to support them. I was told not to use my left hand and she wrapped it with sport tape temporarily. Sh said it would last 3 to five days but it came off that night. It was too tight anyway.
I have been complaining about my left hand for a year and this is the first visit I have ever had with OT. There is a steroid patch she will put on me. Cool no big shot. She said right now the cure is rest but later some exercises. My left hand is killing me and I am on a ton of pain killers. Finally I got a referral from neurologist and an appointment. All this is outpatient too at the teaching hospital with great services. I told the nursing home rehab folks here but they did nothing for months. I was told I do not need any treatment or rehab. Therapists at the hospital disagree. So I am invisible to the rehab people who do not even look me in the eye or say hello. In the beginning I got PT here for two weeks, then they said I was done. It was just using hand and leg pedals. They told me I can not go to outpatient therapy while I am here because therapy is here. My insurance says otherwise and even sends me over there. What a great blessing to meet with therapists trained in neuro stuff, real specialists in their field.
I have hope again. For many things. Really glad my hand pain is not all nerve pain. It feels different from leg,but the burning is there.
Only snag is the pcp nurse called it into a pharmacy instead of a medical supply and pharmacy does not do splints. So I have to call the doc office and tell them the procedure of getting a pre auth first and then med supply place will call me to have appt. The therapist told me the procedure.
I am looking forward to relief. I do not need more things hurting. Celebrating good care!
