The Turtle and the Dog

I saw the funniest thing last night. Our son let our turtle (a red eared slider) out of his cage to run around the house (he's about six inches wide). We don't do this too often because he is small enough to get in things we can't get him out of - so we had to watch him. We've never done this around the dog, and when she saw the turtle she thought it was something for her to play with, or eat. Our son sent her back to her bed, where she stayed on alert and watched the turtle "Jaws". The turtle decided to come closer to the dog, he wasn't concerned (the turtle). My son picked up the turtle to show the dog, and they were about a foot apart, and the turtle stuck his head out of his shell, as far as he could, and tried to bite the dogs nose. It really scared the dog (she is about 2' tall and 50 lbs, so she isn't a small dog). So we didn't have to worry about her messing with the turtle after that. I wish I had somehow been able to video tape the turtle sticking its head out of its shell, stretching as far as it could, with it's mouth open as wide as it could, going after the dogs nose. Nobody expected any of that to happen.... not us or the dog. I'm glad the turtle didn't connect with the dogs nose.

Many years ago, when I was growing up, my sister and I had a rabbit, named "Bun-Rab." S/he got the name because my father told us we could keep it on one condition, that we name it "Bun-Rab."

We also had a Belgian Shepard, who incessantly bothered "Bun-Rab" by nudging her/him from her/his bum. "Bun-Rab" tried to stay away from the dog.

We used to bring "Bun-Rab" up from his cage during my parents' cocktail hour. "Bun-Rab" had her/his own "cocktail" and hors d'oeuvres of water dish and carrots and celery on the fireplace hearth. One night, my parents were drinking martinis. "Bun-Rab" went over to my father's chair, went up on her/his hind legs, placing her/his forepaws on my Dad's chair. S/He wiggled her/his nose and Dad thought "Bun-Rab" wanted to try his martini. Dad placed a small dollop of martini into the rabbit's dish and the rabbit drank it w/ relish. Immediately after consuming the bit of martini, s/he looked around and saw the dog lying across the room, minding her own business.

Now, you need to understand, we were in the living room and there was a large archway that led into the music room. The rabbit went across the room, turned around in front of the dog and kicked her w/ her/his hind feet. The dog, nonplussed expression on her face, slid all the way into the next room! It was so funny. The rabbit then swaggered back to the hearth and fell asleep.

Lest you think the rabbit was harmed by the liquor, please not to worry. "Bun-Rab" lived to a very old age...perhaps that bit of martini actually preserved her/him. :hahaha:
