The big toe

Oops, was I getting too complacent? Too confident that things are going well? More proof that I need to take a day at a time I guess.

Last evening Bill asked me to check his big toe - on his affected side, no less, because it feels like he has an ingrown toenail. This is the toe that he stubbed a few weeks ago and I've worked hard to keep from becoming infected. Today we go to the doctor. I noticed this morning the toe seems to be "feverish" and looks a little swollen and now appears red at the end. Ouch.........

A stubbed toe may seem small, but for a man who is diabetic and has a very hard time keeping his sugar under control - even with the sugar "hall monitor" he has for a wife - an infection in his toe could easily lead to a real unpleasant consequence. I'll not go there, first I'll take him to the doctor instead of beginning my old stand-by epsom salt soaks. I'll let the doctor tell me that's what we need to do.

Wednesday he had a tooth pulled at the VA and that seems to be healing well. The poor guy - the dentist touched his lower lip with some sort of tool and he came away with about an inch long "wound" that resembles a cankar sore. The dentist was pretty embarrassed about that one!

Winter is in full swing, it's cold out (28 degrees is cold in North Carolina) and we are ready for spring. Last January he spent the month in the hospital and we've almost gotten through the month with no crisis - he hasn't even had the sniffles, so I'll just be grateful we've gotten this far.

Later:

It is an ingrown toenail. Antibiotics....INR check Monday.....Podiatrist Tuesday....this is our life.
