coffee mocha and explosions

A friend of mine suggested I mix some instant coffee with some hot cocoa mix for a coffee mocha. Actually it tastes great, and a lot cheaper than Starbucks. However, the last two times I bought some coffee and cocoa mix I had a bit of a problem. I am not sure if it was the hot weather, but when I opened the vacume pack seal, there was a minor explosion. It was not a big deal, but it scattered quite a bit of coffee and the cocoa mix everywhere. Big mess. I bought some more yesterday, so to be on the safe side I took it out on the patio. Still a little explosion but not a big mess on the floor, just on me.

Hmm. i have heard of mixing them.. but I have never heard of it "exploding" may leave more space at the top of the container so it has room to expand.

Doug,

I too have mixedd the 2 together for an inexpensive mocha. I've never heard of the "explosion" though on opening the vacuum seal. Perhaps easing the seal open a bit at a time might help (I have to do that with yogurt containers or I wear some of it lol)

doug, maybe you should shake and settle the coffee down before opening it or make a small hole in the seal before opening it to let the air escape. messes are no fun to have to clean up. good luck next time.

:BashHead: Thanks, Kim I never thought of that.

Doug there should be a vacuum seal on the side of the package just press that and it will release the pressure and not explode... that's what they do here to sell their coffee at a discount in the wholesale store..It just means it's very fresh!! Now add some cinnamon and a bit of nutmeg if you like, also some sugar to taste and instant coffee whitener or the real thing" cream".. I call it fireside coffee, it would be good cold... Let me know how you like it...

Thanks Deenie.

I actually bought another jar of coffee and was careful to try and poke a very small in it, and no explosion. :Clap-Hands:
