I have colored my hair off n on for years. I was tow head blonde when I was young, and it got darker as I got older.

A color I would describe as "MOUSE" the last few years it seems when I color, no matter if I use Ash it still brings out golden highlights and it tends to be more of a "strawberry" blonde. I have let it be mouse with gray for well over a year.

Well I don't know why, but I decided to "brighten" it up the other day.. I had color in the cabinet. I decided to leave it on for the maximum time. Rinsed it off... and YIKES.. talk about Brassy blonde.. I think I looked like a TUBA...LOL.. so the next day, I had another box of coloring and thought oh ok I will bring it up a bit more and get rid of some of this "red/gold"

OMG :o :yikes: what kind of whacked out blonde is this............

Saturday was cold, rainy, we were going into town.. I plunked a hat on my head...... You have to understand I DO NOT wear hats.

it was a blue ski type winter hat.. I was in the hair color aisle. John siad what r u doing.. I said I have to do something with this hair I HATE it. HMMMM he says. and walks off to let me ponder all the various colors... staying away from blonde... on to light browns........... I finally decided on light almond brown.....

by the time we got home, and things put away, etc. I didn't feel like fooling with my hair.

Sunday am I got up, made breakfast .. did dishes.. looked in mirror .. and grabbed the box .... I came out and turned on the timer.. ok 25 minutes... John looked over and said OMG.... it looks RED. well I knew i had to get some red back in to pick up the brown tones. I went in and smooshed it around some.. ok, under the red tone I see an ashy brown.. came back out, he said how long does it stay on.. I said 25 minutes..

John said what are you going to do if it is RED. I said then I am going to Cindy (my beautician) he said whats she going to do.. I said FIX IT. he said hmph.

Off to the shower I went.. of course cringing the whole time thinking...please dont be purple or green..LOL

Ok it is a light almond :Clap-Hands: :Clap-Hands: :happydance: :happydance: not quite as dark as I wanted... i should have left it on another 10 min I think, but I was Nervous .......... I used the hair dryer... OH YEAH definately a color I can live with..

I walked out of the bathroom..... to get John's reaction............ He said OH wow I like it It LOOKS REALLY GOOD.

Bonnie,

Your hair color story bought back memories for me -- long forgotten ones.

I too have ashy blond hair. I colored it from the time I was 14 until I was 21. When I finally decided to quit I actually had no idea what my real color looked like. I spent six months progressively going darker until I could not see any difference in the color of new growth.

Fast forward 30+ years. My hair is now turning gray and it probably looks better than it ever has. The gray mixes in the the blond very well. I remember watching my dad and his sisters hair doing the same thing. Now my dad's sister (the only one of the three alive) is 88. Her hair is completely white now and looks really good. Hope mine get like that!

Good luck to you!

bonnie, i'm glad you got it fixed. hair coloring is an art it seems. i too have colored my hair since i was a teenager, i remember being told years ago about silver drops. not sure if they still make them. they help tone down the red in hair coloring especially if you have red in your natural color. i had to use them in my younger days. i am a light brown with reddish highlights in my natural color. i now and for years let my beautician color my hair. i have for over 25yrs just hade it frosted, streaked, weaved with the blonde highlights to cover the gray mostly now. in fact i'm due for another session. thanks for reminding me,lol its good john approves of it too.

Bonnie,

Funny hair color story. My ex, Tom, was gray from age 22 or so. He's blond so it was never very noticeable, but it always bothered him. When we separated he came to pick up the kids after playing basketball in gym shorts all sweaty trying to look cool. He flexed a few times for effect and then complained about being being sore. I casually said you know Tom maybe you're just getting too old for this as I shot an innocent look at his hair poor guy was only 36. He so had it coming. The following week the the door bell rings and there is Tom with bright red hair. I looked at and said we'll take 2 happy meals and a cheeseburger. the genius tried to dye it but didn't read the color on the box, just went by the picture and dyed it black. He then tried to get it out and oxidized it. The following week he showed up shaved. Tom didn't weather the divorce well.

Be grateful you have mouse that's an easy transformation to gray. The only way to get from black to gray is through Lily Munster.
