Hi again everyone

I just checked on the J room and found that mama J had posted earlier today. Here is her post.

Hey everyone this has been a very good day so far, Kyle had his swallowing tests this am and they went very very well hopefully by Wednesday will have some pureed food. He continues to make movements and voice words which is doing very well at. Take care Mama Jay.

So it sounds like Kyle is inch by inch and row by row making his garden grow.

Way to go Kyle.

Question: Have any of you been following Dr Jill Bolte Taylor. She had a Left side brain Hemorrhage back in 1996. She related her stroke experience on the website TED in February of this year.

She bills herself as a brain scientist (a singing one at that) and goes about on the tv talk shows and various public speaking engagements relating her stroke experience. (which to say the least is kinda out there)

Dr Taylor has also written a book this past year My Stroke of Insight Peace is just a thought away

So is it me or is there something strange about Dr. Taylor's stroke experience that leaves one with the feeling that having a stroke is a big joke (like a wow man far out trippin experience)

I am NOT trying to be critical of Dr Taylor but I just find myself with those back of the mind (excuse the pun) feelings that relating this sort of experience to someone who has never experienced stroke gives the impression that stroke is a big joke.

Considering that Dr Taylor appears to have made a complete recovery from this far out stroke experience I fail to see how anyone hearing her speak for the first time could ever take stroke seriously.

Please tell me that is all in my imagination and that Dr Taylor is making thousands of people aware of the dangers in the risk factors of stroke.

I would really like to know your opinion. Please leave a comment telling me what you think.

Thanks and Smiles :)

Hi Gary,

First and foremost - Keep up the progress Kyle - You're doing terrific. Continued thoughts and prayers to he and his family.

As to Dr. Taylor, I have not yet read the book -0 I have it ordered through my local library to read. It is out of curiosity that I want to read it. I've got her video and was not quite impressed with her outlook on stroke survival. I can see where some might take a different view regarding experiencing a stroke.

Thanks Donna

Yep first and foremost we are all soooo proud of our man Kyle. His attitude is the stuff that recovery's are made of.

His parents have both told me how much they appreciate the support and encouragement they have received from the stroke community.

Big thank you to everyone...

Thanks for your comment on Dr. Jill. Right after I posted I found the post by justsurvivin on her blog and all of the comments that she received on the subject of what I call Dr. Jill's "magic medicine show" complete with brain props.

I really think that there is a good possibility to put a positive spin on the whole Dr. Jill thing and use it to increase stroke awareness in a positive way right across the net. (which in essence is the entire globe)

I am most interested in hearing what others feel about what she is doing and just what message she is actually giving to people in general.

Smiles :)

Gary, good to see you relating that Kyle is such a brave survivor, and that his family, and all who know of him are cheering him on.

I think the whole thing about Dr Jill is that she had "A" stroke. Some folk here have had a series of strokes and that is a whole differnt thing, as is a stroke plus other illness. There is a whole different aproach needed to PT, OT etc with the second, third, fourth etc stroke and even with a lot of hard work sometimes only partial recovery. And as we all know a severe stroke may lead to death, either right away or within twelve months or so.

Ray "recovered" fully from his first stroke in 1990, it took six months of PT and a restructured approach to the work he did to get him back to work, but he was driving after two months and really ready to live life to the full again after six. He was left with anaesthesia down the left side and the fatigue that MOST recovered stroke survivors still have. After strokes 2 and 3, which happened four weeks apart in April and May 1999 there was NO WAY he was going to make a full recovery, the damage to his brain in depth and area was too great for that.

So when Dr Jill says she had a stroke we need to know how widespread and how deep into the brain the damage was, in what area etc. We need to know how much therapy she had. It is insulting in a way to boast about one person's recovery in front of people whose strokes, being much more severe, have left them with visible, restricting, permanent limitations. My two cents worth.

Hi Sue

Thanks for your comment and your feedback on Dr Taylor. I know it is difficult to watch someone making fun of the experience of having a stroke when there are so many that not only have to endure the stroke experience more than once but also have to live the remainder of their lives with the after effects of those strokes.

Thank you for sharing.

The more we care, the more we share...

Smiles :)
