New hearing aids and Larry's Engineer Reunion

First, I have to mention the hearing aids. Larry's new aids came in Thursday of all days just when I had 3 other things I had to take care of. I knew he wanted to wear them to the reunion, so I juggled things around and we went to get them. They had to be calibrated to him using the audiologist's computer. The brand name is Starkey, and they are digital of course, and type is RIC, which is receiving in canal. The earpiece that holds the battery fits in back of his ear, which is new to him since the previous ones were inside the ear. There is a wire attached to the piece that fits into the ear canal and a little wire that curls around inside the ear. These will be easier for him to put on with practice. He was able to get one in last night but I think he can do both in time. He has not worn his old ones, as he didn't like them and said they whistled a lot. They were also hard to put in. These are suppose to be easier to keep clean and with no whistling. If you have any questions, message me and I will try to help but am no expert. They are not cheap!

The Engineering Technology reunion was last night. We got to the social hour after most had arrived. Several of Larry's former co-workers and some of the big Execs spoke to him. Some didn't say "hello" but I guess they didn't feel they should bother. So irritating! I think some may have been shocked at seeing him with a cane and less weight. However, I have to say, my thin man looked sharp in his new sport jacket all dressed up! We had a nice table with friends we knew, and the best part was Larry could hear everyone! There were several speakers that told stories of working together and Larry could hear them from our table. I didn't enjoy most of the speeches but this was a group of engineers after all. lol All in all, it was a nice evening, with friends we haven't seen lately and good food. The waiter even cut up his steak and green beans for him and, as usual, Larry couldn't eat it all.

The rest of the weekend is just relaxing. The weather is rain most of the day again tomorrow anyway. Now it's time to get some of my projects started.

Julie: wonderful news all around. The fact that he can hear must be amazing! Yes, he will figure out trying to put them in, but just the fact that he likes them and can hear is amazing! Strictly from a nursing stand point, hearing reopens the whole world for someone. Good news! Debbie

Julie,

I got mine from the VA with the same procedure but mine are just one piece battery inside and a little stem to pull them out the ear! Try that with one hand getting them in the ear!! They told me they were very expensive so don't get them wet! For that reason I wear them when I'm in a place I won't be sweating!

I spent 14 years on the Army Pistol Team and in Artillery units so I'm blessed to be hearing at all! The stroke had no affect on my hearing or speech thank God! I just can't walk very far or much but I got my scooter!

Larry should adjust pretty good with these new ones if he is able to insert them both himself! Glad you two enjoyed the social and got to see old friends and co-workers! It would have been great if Larry would have stood up at his table and told a joke or two like we used to do on here! Thanks Julie for the report!

Julie,

I am so glad to hear that the long awaited reunion went so well ...Perfect timing for the hearing aids. I am glad that they work so well. They sound like the kind that William has.

With time Larry will be able to use them well. William does not use his. It seems that he can hear plenty well with out them. He always hears what i don't want him to hear.

Take care.

JULIE,

BEING ABLE TO HEAR IS A REAL BLESSING (JUST ANOTHER THING WE SURVIVORS TAKE FOR GRANTED). LIKE FRED I GOT MY HEARING AIDS FROM THE VA AND IA M VERY SATISFIED WITH THEM PLUS, AT NIGHT THEY SET IN A CHARGER BY THE SIDE OF THE BED TABLE. AFTER 22 YEARS OF JET AIRCRAFT ENGINES IN THE AIR FORCE, I AM GLAD I DIDN'T DO PERMANENT DAMAGE TO MY EARS.

NEVER GIVE UP!

Yes, these new aids work well and Larry is able to put them on. He cannot do the batteries however. I have a hard time with two hands!

Fred and Will, the audiologist does hearing tests for the VA. She also travels to Ft. Leonardwood here in Missouri to test the soldiers. Larry is not a vet - so we pay. His dad died in WWII in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart. Larry was just a baby.

Larry could hear without the aids but not very well. You had to be close or repeat things 3 times as I did. I'm so happy he started wearing them again. Now if I can just get my ears to stop buzzing. I think I will have to see the audiologist too!
