Time for a transport chair?

It is so nice to get out and about with Larry before it gets to hot. (Also, he can't use that excuse on me for not getting out) lol

Last Thursday I had lunch with a couple of friends. The lunch was nice and included a fashion show that was fun. I didn't buy anything but one of my friends bought a pretty jacket and the other one bought earrings. We use to go out a lot more together, but now between their schedules, (both babysit for grandkids) and mine with Larry, it practically takes an act of God to get a lunch date. It's nice to have a conversation with friends as Larry doesn't usually talk much at home and we are together 24/7, so not much new to talk about. He is happy to see me go out and happy to see me come back. He knows I don't stay out long.

Last night we went to church and I had a long sleeved shirt for him to wear. I put it on and left to get something else, and noticed he had the buttons all buttoned up when I came back. I don't know why I did it before for him!

Today we went to our granddaughter's dance recital. She has been with this dance company for 10 years, starting at age 3. It's cute to see the little 3 year olds in their tutus. We got there early with Larry only to discover all handicapped places taken. I told Larry I would drop him near the entrance and as I did, our granddaughter came out to greet us. I told her to walk her grandpa to the door. I don't think she knew how slow he walks but Larry told me later she told him

"take your time". Then we get in the lobby and his daughter gave us the tickets which were clear down in the first row. This was another long walk but he made it - slow but sure. Their were 15 different performances with different age groups. Emily did really well in 4 different dance numbers. The costumes are pretty and pretty expensive. I got the car again while his son and son - in-law stayed with him and walked him to our car.

I have been thinking of getting a transport wheelchair and after today, I have decided to get one. Larry just cannot walk too far and tires easily. I don't want him using it all the time except for things like today. I will have to look into it. His wheelchair is too heavy to lug around, and this way I can keep the transport one in the car.

This week he tries the Saeboflex with the therapist to get his fingers moving . I don't hold much hope for any improvement in this but it is worth a try.

Hope your week is good. I just wish I could get rid of this pain in my neck and shoulder.

Julie: I loved Bruce's transport WC. Fit behind the seats in the truck and easily in the trunk of the Honda, so it was always protected and like you say, in an instant, I could have it out and available. Even with the best planning, things come up.

There are two men at Rehab, that I expect walk like Larry does. They are both left-sided strokes, so of course I gravitated to them and their families. The men are incredible. Our Rehab is huge and they insist on walking and using the elevators. But both wives have the travel WCs and use it to help them tote all the "stuff", so there is another benefit.

Since the travel WC is a short term, quick fix - for you and Larry it is perfect. When Bruce refused to walk, we had to bring the big WC since he is in it all the time and we have to traverse all grades.

They are relatively inexpensive, easy to use and make a great back up when Larry gets tired. Plus almost no weight and easy in and out for you. Let us know. Debbie

i recommend ( personally ) the ultra lite by the drive company... but any thing is good.... the reason i like the ultralite is it is a single bar handle like a stroller kinda in that i can use one hd to steer the thing very easily through crowds and hold on to say my granson or a bag of groceries ---seems like there is always more to hold ( dan holds his fair share) but there is always one more thing.... nancyl

Well Julie, I hope that works for you being easy to load/unload from the car, but I think not too easy to push with the small wheels on certain surfaces!

Julie,

I think that it is great that Larry is able and willing to walk so far.

But, let us know how the travel wc works.
