well here i am again... Dan is refusing to eat or drink...... he does drink his supplements and take his meds--- thank god ----- we even had a agreement today he would eat--- but no- not today... it is 90 some degrees ( yes in ND) and humid so this grounds us at home as well... i cant risk him becoming more dehyderated than the slow decline he is doing to himself...... bearing in mind with the stroke/braininjury he does not see it the same way... he gives no reason, demands nothing - not trying to manipulate just won't eat or drink - he is even reasonable pleasent about it.. just a kinda no thankyou... denies any pain ( more or different than the normal pain for him) ---- his stomach of course is such a daily issue for him I wish this merry-go-around would stop - i want to take my husband and get off this crazy ride... but we are residents of the merry go around.... oh well no suprises here - I've been here before - unfortunantly nancyl

Something you said made me wonder. We get 90 degree temps here frequently in the summer and temps that high knock out my appetite. But I've found I do better with high water content fruit and the drinks like boost and the diabetic ones like glucerna. I can often add a bit of cottage cheese with the fruit or make a cold plate with tomatoes and cold salads like egg salad. Nothing heavy in high heat and things with high water content are refreshing.

excellent point--- and that could be part of it.... unfortunatley with his gastroperesis we have to avoid a lot of the high fiber fruits and veg. doesent mean i dont try like watermellon and a some canned fruit but none of it... i am thankfull he will drink the supplements with his meds... so right now two supplements a day is the only nourishment/liquid... he refuses all water, drinks ( juice ) pop( not that this is a preference)... since the stroke most liquids do not appeal to him... right now he is sitting next to me and his stomach is just a growling away--- hopefully this will get better before it gets worse....nancy

Nancy: our Brittany was ADHD. When she would eat, it took hours. During the week with work and day care, this was almost impossible. But her Pediatrician advised that she would eat when she was hungry. We took to leaving plates of easy, finger foods around - she would graze, but at her convenience - gotta love her. Today she has a college degree, beautiful daughter; so as difficult as those early years were, she survived.

Make it easy: precut fruits and veggies that he can manage with his gastroporesis. Hard boiled eggs, shelled and cut, even deviled. Crackers, cheese, dip. Easy stuff. No thinking. Makes your whole house a dining room. We did French toast, buttered and with syrup, cut up. Left on a dish at her level, pancakes the same way. There was rarely "meal time", just food all over the place. A nightmare? Yes, but it worked.

A Doctor I admired once told me; in Nursing, not in real life; that the body can go days without food, 24 hours without liquids. You may have to play the heavy here. The supplements are great and keep those up, but 480 ml of liquid a day doesn't cut it. Do not interfere with the supplements and the medications. That is a success. But you may have to start and make some trade offs for additional liquids-Bruce likes Crystal Lite Pink Lemonade. While I have to look at the sugar content, that may not be an issue for you. Find one thing he will tolerate and then make your deals. With Bruce it is no liquid, no drives. You have to negotiate what Dan needs to do with your help and loves, with the liquid intake. Give it a shot. Debbie

When Dad lived here in the last few months before his cancer took him he suddenly didn't want to eat or drink. I said I would make a milkshake for him using the maple syrup his brother from Canada had brought for him on one of his visits. He agreed to that.

That milkshake had milk plus two heaped dessert spoons of powdered milk, one scoop of ice cream and two dessert spoons of Ensure. I then added a couple of table spoons of maple syrup. It blended into a thick shake and Dad just loved it. We called it our Canadian special and he would have three or more a week. So find some kind of drink that is a sentimental favourite and maybe turn it into a food as I did.

Sue.

Nancy, I know that is not the ideal solution, and that it poses certain problems, but what about a g-tube, if all else fails? Becky
