Go to the medical supply store and get a spirometer. Have his doctor advise you where to set the meter. A spirometer is a device that Dan can breath into and inhale to strengthen his breathing strength/lung capacity. He will not get into range right away but in time will and it will help with this congestion now.

Nancy: he may have bruised or even broken ribs. Will need to splint to cough. Have him hold a throw pillow over his left side-tightly and with a bit of a lift. This should relieve some of the left sided pain. You may have to do it for him if you are there when he coughs. But since he knows the area of pain, best he do it.

Another thing - steam his head. Bowl of steaming water, towel over his head, breathe in the steam and that should really loosen him up and make it easier for him to cough it up.

You could consider Mucinex D if not contraindicated with his other medications. Debbie

I been having a nose drip for the pass few days and on the left nostril I can feel it running so now I keep a hankie to check every few minutes!

Now "I never had a cough to be persistent"!
