What's up with this vision?

I get so frustrated at this stroke thing! Mike and I went to town today to pick up a few things. He dicided to walk instead of use his chair. He did really well for the most part but got tired in one store and had to sit down for a few minutes. Then we walked up the street to the next store and went inside, the clerk was coming down an aisle on our left side and asked if he could help us. Mike said "sure, but where are you?" I looked up just as he looked looked down at me and he said " It's gone, I can't see my left side again! It's gone just like it came back!" What the heck! Why would it go away! Has anybody else had this happen?

It will come back -- i'm sure.... but yes it is wierd that it is gone, it might have soemthing to do with getting tired-- dan and many lose cognition when tired maybe for a time the eyesight will be that way??

Cat: he was definitely over tired, as Nancy suggests. The one thing, always, in your mind is that nothing is quick or overnight with stroke. Baby steps. You can never cross an issue off your list. It will come back to haunt you.

The trick is to not overstress those areas already recovering. And a lot of that wil depend on Mike. If he is willing to extend himself, go a little longer, you go with it. Always! But then you must insist on nap, because that is important too. He can't see, OK time to go home and rest. Feet up, little down time. Personally I would not even advise reading or TV. Brain just told you it had had enough. Keep in mind the pathways have reduced, new pathways are not on-line 100% yet. Those rewired areas will shut down the secondary work they have been asked to do, priority being their main function.

It was a good day honey. Think of all he did and was willing to do. Knew when to rest. This is major and Mike is working so hard to recovery. But it is up to you to keep all the pieces aligned. As he goes through these issues, he will learn how to balance himself, but for now, you need to be on top of it. It really was a great day. Debbie

I think the same as the others. For instance, I've heard that if a stroke surv. gets a UTI, they can go very downhill and lose speech and everything. It's kinda like if you start freezing, your body knocks out the supply to your extremities first, to keep the center most important part afloat. Same with your brain, when it gets over tired or taxed by another physical symptom of your body, it begins to shut down things to keep a good concentration on the main brain activities. Keep those naps in place everyday. Healing brains need those naps!

Thanks Ladies! I told him what you said. He still doesn't have it back yet and says he doesn't think he was "that" tired. Says he don't think it will come back cause he has been tired before and didn't lose it! He seems kinda down but maybe it will come back soon and he will see you guys are right!

Cat: pick him right back up! by the seat of his pants. He has worked through this before. He knows the exercises, therapies: the reading, scanning to his left, moving things around his table -into line of sight, finding the "lost it" spot and then the concentration to get the peripherals back, shifting eyes left and right, blocking off the right one with his hand.

No this is not as "fun" now isn't that an odd term, as working on the walking, balance, but it must be done. You need to remind him that he can not drive again with vision loss and needs to fit in the time.

If it is not back by tomorrow, call the Neuro. Debbie

Aww that’s a bummer. I sure hope that it will come back and it won’t get him down in the meantime. Just try to keep his spirits up as best as you can.

Yes ma'am, that is why I can't read many lines all typed together I lose it and don't know where I am!! 5 lines are great for me which is about one paragraph, 7 lines at most over that when I see a comment or a post I pass it up and don't try reading it cause I get lost in the meaning!!

Went to family doctor and he said it could be that his rerouting is kicking is and just hasn't made the permanent connection yet, and may be that way rest of his life, or the arteries feeding that area are not quite open. I know his blood was way to thick when they did his INR on tuesday so they upped his blood thinner meds. Maybe that has something to do with it? Don't know but it still hasn't come back yet! Still keeping our fingers crossed!

Maybe his blood being too thick was what caused him to lose it again. The arteries supplying blood to the eyes have to be some of the smallest in the body so makes sense that if blood is to thick it can't get all the way down into them. Sure am hoping so. I am with Debbie, think you should at least call the neuro if it still isn't back to see if the INR being off has anything to do with it. He may want to see him and do another scan or might have some suggestions for him to do. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed (well the ones on my left foot anyway).

Cat, I just had a thought... remember when I told you that when you smoke, your arteries constrict? Had he been smoking when his vision went again? I know it's a bear to quit, but the smoking is only going to keep him at a greater risk. I hope he can take this big step, and I know it is a big hard step, and start getting rid of this smoking problem.

I think we have figured out that Mike does have left side vision. Its just that his brain is not registering that it is there. Don't know how to explain it but we sat this morning and talked about all he sees and from what I can tell he is seeing all there is to see on his left side but he feels like he should be seeing more. He thinks all things in his perifrial vision shoul be clear. I told him that things to the far left when looking straight ahead will not be clear only that you know they are there but not like you are looking straight at them. He doesn't have the black hole there anymore so I think his brain is just not telling him that he is seeing all there is to see! Does that sound right to you guys?

-this sounds like it really was gone, not just blurry. But maybe it is popping back in now if he is seeing things peripheally again. It's hard to say if it will do this in & out thing for awhile or what. I guess you should keep a daily record of it and ask the neuro when you see him.

Sounds like you are right Sandy. I will have the neuro check it on Thursday and get his thoughts on it and see if it is there or not. Mike is a little flustered and can't seem to figure out if he is seeing the way he is suppose to or not. We will just have to leave it to the experts I guess! LOL hell I don't know if we are gaining ground or not anymore! Just go one day at a time and do what he feels like doing. How is Bob? Hope he is still gaining ground. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers!
