Taking a bath [video]

Today I took a bath by myself since my stroke in 2001. It was a milestone. I remember when I had a huge bath seat I used to sit on right after the stroke. When I moved in with my dad he luckily had a stand up shower. I began using the handle from wal mart http://www.walmart.com/ip/Safe-Er-Grip-Bathtub-and-Shower-Assist-Bar-16.5/10848474?findingMethod=rr to help me get into the bath tub when I moved into my first apartment.

Now today, living on my own, I got into the bath tub, took a bath, and got out by myself without falling all by myself! I had not taken a bath in 3 years when my mom had to help me so it felt so great to do it by myself. I brought the phone in the bathroom with me just incase I slipped or got to scared to get out and needed to call someone for help. But luckily I did not have to use the phone :) I am very happy and relieved that I did not fall. I was super nervous and it took me a while to figure out how I was going to get out but I did it!

It wasnt all peachy though. The hard tub floor kind of hurt my left side when I tried to roll over since the muscles on that side are so tight, my left foot hit the faucet a few times, and my bath is kind of small so it wasnt as fun taking a bath as a 5'7 woman using half my body compared to an able bodied little kid washing my barbies hair lol. Since my 11 year stroke anniversary is less than 30 days away, it means a lot to me that I accomplished this on my own. If I would have fallen or chickened out, I would feel horrible so Im really trying to pat myself on the back for this accomplishment. I know I will get better and more comfortable with practice but right now I am just enjoying the fact that I did itfor the first time ever :)

By the way this video of a girl taking a shower with no arms was my motivation

I am happy for you that you were able to take bath on your own without any injury. I tried once before to see if I can do it, once I realised I am able to do it, I did not care as much later on with all the risks involved in falling, anyway for me showers r more enjoyable.

From my own experience in the shower inside a garden tub I never had a problem with handles to hold on to and a mat and shower chair in the tub! I know if I can do it you could too and see part of your problem is you never tried much to use your left hand!!

I say that because you always wanted to hide that arm even in pictures you have taken! I had to start out trying to use my weak arm with five month stay in the hospital on the rehab floor!

When I finally got home it was a breeze! We are blessed to still have both our arms and legs some soldiers here have lost one of each with no complaints!!

Congratulations, you did it! You know I bought one of those handles a couple of years ago, and was unsure if it would really hold, so never installed it! Seems it said something on it about taking off and putting it on everytime, to make sure it was still a good connection - and that made me worry about it breaking away.

KATRINA,

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR MILESTONE! A WORD OF CAUTION, DON'T USE THE GRAB BARS WITH THE PLASTIC SUCTION CAPS, THEY RELEASE WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT. USE THE ONES THAT ARE NATURAL RUBBER, ROTH IS THE MAKER OF THEM AND THEY CAN BE TRUSTED TO NOT LET LOOSE WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT. YOU GO GIRL! STAY SAFE!

Katrina,

I'm proud of you. I'm only a year out from my stroke. I remember my first ever shower on my own. It seemed like a huge accomplishment, just to be able to stand long enough and keep my balance. I'd be lost without my handles on the wall, too. Use caution and keep trying!
