Took Larry to exercise at the rehab center today

Larry likes to start out on the "Motor Med". This is the machine he sits at with affected hand velcrode on the pedals and other just holding the right pedal. He can adjust the strength but always stays at "3" and then goes for 7 minutes one way and reverses to 7 min the other. This is for the arms/hands. This machine was taken so we went to the parallel bars and worked on stepping up on a 6" block and then side stepping. He then works on balance with a foam square looking to each side 12 times and then up to ceiling. This is without holding on but I have the gait belt to hold him. We went back to the Motor Med. He will then go on the bicycle and pedal for 14 minutes and the to a machine I call the Hipolater. I adjust the weight and pressure and he swings his leg out left, then facing machine, then right. I then adjust the weight for his other leg and reverse the action. He wanted to go home after this but I made him walk the track once since it wasn't crowded. I asked about a gentlemen we haven't seen for months and the receptionist said she heard he had another stroke. I was sad to here this as he had been working so hard for years there and stays for 3 hours or more. I hope he will recover well. I didn't tell Larry.

The other night when I was putting Larry to bed he said "I don't know what I would do without you, you take good care of me". I haven't heard anything like this from him lately and was happy to hear it.

I have been asking him to try and do more things himself. He can put the hearing aids in himself but the other day, he actuallly put in the batteries when I was out. It was difficult as the batteries are so tiny and he had not done this before. The other day he got the pills out of his container for the dayand time, and took them. I'm not sure that was good but I said "good for you, but next time wait for me".

Larry loves to watch baseball but I wish he would learn to love doing something else as the season will be over soon. I got the dozens of exercise sheets out the other day and marked some he had forgotten. He loved that. lol

Larry has been doing better with his swallowing so hopefully that will get better. We have just been invited to another retiree dinner and I know he is worried. We will see what happens.

Julie, I can tell Larry knows you love him and want him to recover so he can do things for himself! I think each survivor man or woman can get that loving feeling I did for sure! I'm so happy for you two! That sounds like my days a few years ago as I was in a struggle mode but soon got it together to function on my own!

That's like a graduation and prayers answered! Debbie got Bruce coming along too and he will be another satisfied survivor it just takes time!

Larry and Lenny would make great fans at the game or siting in the same room watching baseball games! I'm a football guy but will watch basketball too!

I had about the same exercises with no change up which makes it old after a few sessions when sometimes you need the weak arm heat wrap for a few minutes to relieve the pains there!

Usually it's 50-55 minutes of same stuff while the therapist carry her IPad around from place to place and can't tell you what we did yesterday!

Julie: Larry is just doing so great. I do so wish Bruce would show some interest. He has been exposed to so much, things I thought he loved he is so ready to just forget. Never asks. When I ask the answer is always "No." So kudos to Larry who will go and work out and even is agreeable to more.

Safe being left alone, taking care of business safely. Just wanting to get more back and work towards it. And to you - for being there and making Larry the priority. I try not to look too far forward. Weeks mostly. The thoughts of where we will be in years is just too much to take in. But I admire that you seem to take it in stride, have goals that you consider are attainable and work so hard at getting there.

Yes, he will always be on edge to a night out with his work Buds - but he ends up so enjoying them. And I pray those friends will be willing to take him again. Keep on truckin" Debbie

Julie,

Yes, Tell Larry I applaud him. What a great workout.

Yes you are a great caretaker. I am so glad that he verbailized his gratitude. Wm often does that.

I know that the night out will be fun. The more he does it the easier it will be.

As Debbie said.....We live on a day to day basis. But, progress is infintisimly slow. But, we do progress. Good for us.

Have a great week end.
