wow-- mobility

Dans PT moved Dan from a severe fall risk while walking to a moderate risk today.... I also notice he is so much stronger and steady when walking with the quad cane of course.. the PT said he just seemed more balanced, and i do have to agree.. although factoring in the no antecedent seizure risk takes him right back to a severe fall risk... but all the PT is helping and we will be two years out from stroke date in March -- so yep progress will continue- plugging along slowly, but, at least we are faced forward... so proud of him !!! little pieces at a time..... i still swear those seizures are not a bad thing all the time.. my own wierd theory as some of you know who follow us... i think seizures are a life threating event no doubt, but to me dans seizures seem to be his brain trying to rewire and shorting out, but the shorting out shows that there is rewiring .. and honestly today was one of Dans sharpest days i have seen post stroke--- the PT and I were talking about a hinged brace for him and the therapist was describing the pro's and con's of it for Dans paticular case ( we feel he has to much tone for the hinged type) any how dan pipes up and says, "more mobility" the therapist and i dropped our jaws and watched as dan using his hand was showing the hinge motion for walking.. he followed our conversation and summed it up with one concise word.. mobility... no he said he doesent care if he gets one or not but we can check it out.. at least thats what he tells me in " aphasia".. so here we are almost 2 years out moving like the turtle - lets hope we do, in fact ,win the race..nancyl

Nancy,

I love hearing stories like this. So inspirational. Keep going no matter how slow.

that is what Wm and I do. It is really, really slow. But, we keep plodding away.

Once you get it figured out and he is safe using it then all is OK, that's the way it was in my case going from hemi-walker to quad cane to single point cane and here I am still walking about the same I think and with no falls in two years now!!!

I wish the best way for Dan and you having to be by his side just in case!!!

Nancy: such great news. He is always going to be a fall risk. Heck, after 60, most of the population is - LOL. That you know, but he needs to hear how well he is doing, how much the pro sees and acknowledges. Makes such a difference and the trip certainly helped. Put his mind set from I can't to Heck, lets do it. That was a major undertaking for both of you and just gives him the confidence that yes there is much life beyond stroke.

See if PT doesn't have a hinged brace around that Dan can try. No it won't be custom fit, but the back knee movement to lock it will still work. That is a good way to test the "over toning", he may just have to have an AFO. Bruce, could not wear his hinge after 9 months or so, but once the knee got strengthened, the AFO was fine. Just hate to see you invest in a custom hinge before at least trying one on him.

Good news all around. Happy Thanksgiving and my best to Dan. Debbie

Yes, "Mobility" a big thing in our world. Larry walks very slow and I usually have to tell those in back to just go ahead of us. I am so happy he CAN walk tho. We take what we can get.

Good news for Dan's therapy and his improvement!

Happy Thanksgiving,

Julie

DAN, GREAT JOB. UNTIL YOU CAN LEARN TO LOCK THE KNEE(SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO LEARN ON YOUR OWN) A BRACE THAT BENDS AND LOCKS CAN BE BENEFICIAL FOR SOME PEOPLE.

NEVER GIVE UP!
