It's Been Good!!!!

The past few days have gone well. Chris had another appointment with the OT and now I am doing exercises with his good arm. She wants him to regain the strength on his unaffected side. He is very co-operative with me even tho it causes pain. I have noticed that his affected arm is getting more flexible since I have been doing his exercises 3 times a day. He is starting to show signs of his sense of humor coming back and he is smiling more and more everyday. Today he woke up at 8:15a which is unusual for him and he looked at me with a big smile and said "Good Morning" it almost knocked me off my feet. The past few evenings he has been up till 10 - 10:30p watching or just listening to the TV. At the nursing home they had him in bed by 7:30p and he went sound asleep.

The first week or so that he was home he really didn't say to much. The past few days he has really started talking and expressing his feeling with me. He is so appreciative for everything and he is cracking jokes and smiles as soon as he sees me. Such a change.

He is getting so much better with feeding himself. He still needs my help at times -handling a cup is so much better.

Thursday is Chris' first appointment with his family doctor since he had his strokes. I have never met his doctor, but I'm sure this will be an extensive visit - I am really curious to see what she has to say about the amount of Ativan the nursing home had him own. I feel that this dosage needs to be changed - he always seem so "snowed." I really think this drug inhibits his abiltiy to give it his best try during therapy and when I am working with him.

HI KIM,

SO GLAD TO READ THIS BLOG. BESIDES, ANYONE WHO LOVES CATS CAN'T BE ALL BAD. GIVE CHRIS A PAT ON THE BACK FOR ME.

WHEN I CAME HOME FROM HOSPITAL REHAB, THEY SUGGESTED SOME EXERCISE HELPERS FOR MY ARM AND HAND. ONE WHICH I BOUGHT FOR $20 WAS A PULLEY THAT FITS OVER A DOOR. GO TO: "SAMMONS PRESTON ROLYAN" ON THE WEB. HIT THE FIRST ONE THAT COMES UP. THEN HIT "EXERCISE-FITNESS" ON THE LEFT SIDE. ON THE NEXT SCREEN, HIT THE "PULLEY EXERCISES".

YOU WANT THE MULTI-USE SHOULDER PULLEY, $16 OR $20. I WAS TOLD BY ALL MY THERAPISTS IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP THE SHOULDER MOVING, SO AS TO KEEP THE FlUIDS INSIDE LOOSE. WHEN I FIRST CAME HOME, I HAD TO LIFT my AFFECTED ARM UP TO THE TABLE. NOW I CAN EASILY RAISE MY ARM OVER MY HEAD AND WAVE TO PEOPLE, (OR FLIP THEM OFF IF THE OCCASION ARISES).

I'M NO THERAPIST, SO CHECK WITH YOURS TO SEE IF THIS IS OK. USING THE PULLEY TWICE A DAY SURE HELPED ME A LOT AND IT'S NOT EXPENSIVE. I STILL USE IT.

MY WIFE TELLS ME I'M TERRIBLE AT GIVING INSTRUCTIONS, SO IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, MY E-MAIL IS asquared@adsnet.com.

Hello,

Glad to hear of Chris's progress. Many times I think survivors are overmedicated. I know I was.But also a GP may not be the right Dr. to correct the dose. The Neurolgist may have to do it, or change it. What is Ativan for? I've heard of it, just can't place it.....
