A big surprise....Ray is allowed to eat again!

I have been feeling so much trepidation about Ray coming home and not being able to eat. Of pushing him around with a food bag attached to his stomach. Of our lives taking such a big step backward. I wasn't being given much hope by anyone.

Then I spoke to Ray's old speech therapist Shannon, the one that worked so well with him when he first came home almost five years ago. And she was irate that he hadn't been given any more swallow tests since he got out of the hospital. So I left a note for his speech therapist and the next day they called that he was scheduled with a top doctor over in Southampton. I was hoping they wouldn't say it was getting worse.

But the doc comes out afterwards and tells me Ray can start having puree and thickened liquids immediately! I haven't been so happy since I don't know when. And his place knew about it immediately too, the aide told me as I was leaving how excited and nervous she was to give him his first food in two months. They called me afterwards, and said he kept grabbing the aide's arm when she went to take the spoon away, he was just thrilled to pieces!

Still has a new leg brace in the works, he only just got measured for a new one with a knee attachment yesterday. I just found out he's been walking up and down the halls with the PT daily, probably over 100 steps. I am in awe, and so glad I decided to let him go there, they are the best! His 30 day meeting should be coming up soon, and I'm thinking it might be time to discuss his discharge a little early. I am so anxious for him to be home to help me with the Christmas decorating, it's one of his favorite things in the world.

Stay tuned ;-)

Colleen, that is a great Thanksgiving/Christmas gift.  Hope Ray will be able to enjoy Christmas with you at home.  But the best news is he can and likes to eat!

It will be a slow process, he is getting the thickened containers for now.  Just glad it's going down his throat for a change, after two months of the tube at this point.
