night follies

things got odder at night in rehab... the bathroom obsession seemed to be amplified somehow, like the nurse who'd come in all cheerful asking "does anyone want a suppository tonight?" i mean let's get serious, would anyone ever answer yes to that ? i can see "willing to have" or "need" but "want" ? get real..... then theres the late shift staff, the ones we don't really know because they come on when we're asleep and leave before morning vitals, so if you see them at all its when yyou'rehalf awake and need help with something/// one problem with not knowing them well, is they don't know you, either...one night, 3 am, i was awoken by an aide turning on the light to help my roommate to use the bathroom, the guy notices ii'mawake and comes over "you need to go to the bathroom ?" "no, ii'mfine" "you sure ?" "yes, ii'msure" "are you wet?" "no" "you sure?" i looked at him like he was an alien and repeated "yes, ii'msure" "you want me to check?" NO"- i kid you not, 10 min later when he comes back to help my roommate back to bed, we have the identical conversation!!!! ok, identical on his part, my responses were more forceful... when he left, my roommate cocouldn'ttop laughing, another night at 4 am, an aide came in and said he was supposed to take my oxygen level, knowing full well that my level drops when i sleep, i ask him if theythey'dd to take it at 4 am or when i woke, cause if theythey'dd by time i wanted him to add a notation that i was awake, or the info would be useless, well, he didnt didn'tstand what i was saying and got huffy and said v"well, you can refuse if you want" i said "no, its fine, just put that i'm awake" and then he just walked away/// next morning, one of the nurses i knew well came in and asked what had happened over night. i told her and she started laughing, it seemed that hed wrihe'dn on my chart that id refused to have my vitals taken and all the nurses had known that ccouldn'tbe right cause it wasnt wasn'tlus, they ccouldn'tfigure out why he wanted vitals at 4 am.... next morning, i wake up and the same guys in my room, he wants to do the o2 check again, so i ask if they wanted sleeping or awake again, he gets all nervous and says "oh no, they told me not to wake you...for anything" lol - then there was the respiratory therapist, ok, this one was less funny;but just as clueless - a few weeks after tthey'ddone the sleep study, they put me on the cpap machine, of course, they dididn'trust me to do it right so every night tthey'dwake me at midnight to put it on, after a couple nights i said not only was it annoying, giving me less rather than more sleep and insulting, being woken by a different stranger every night was triggering my ptsd, so they finally agreed to let me do it myself;but it seemed they still ddidn'ttrust me, so one night some poor resp therapist comes down at 1 am and notices that the mask had shifted in my sleep, does he either just leave it and let me sleep, or wake me to fix it ? of course not.... he just leans over me trying to fix it himself, well, if you want to see someone with ptsd freak badly, lean over them, inches from their face when they wake up in the middle of the night.... so i'm screaming and kicking and my roommate's yelling "back off, leave her alone till shes fully awake" nurses are running in to see whats going on, and what does this guy do trying to calm me ? he grabs my bare leg, *not* a good choice.... one thing about rehab, never dull, lol

TEAL,

AS YOU CAN SEE BY THE TIME, I DON'T SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT. LUCKILY, I HAD A PRIVATE ROOM ON THE REHAB FLOOR. IF I HAD THE TV ON OR WAS READING, A MIDNIGHT NURSE WOULD COME IN AND GET ME DRESSED FOR BREAKFAST AND THERAPY. SHE CLAIMED IT GAVE HER A HEADSTART ON THE DAY. THEN THE DAY NURSE WOULD COME IN AND ASK ME WHY I WAS SLEEPING IN MY CLOTHES.

SO WHEN I WAS ABLE TO DO SOME THINGS FOR MYSELF, I STILL LET HER GET ME DRESSED. THEN WHEN SHE LEFT, I STRUGGLED BUT CHANGED BACK INTO THE HOSPITAL GOWN, AND WENT BACK TO SLEEP. I WOULD GET UP BEFORE THE END OF HER SHIFT AND BUZZ HER TO GET ME DRESSED. AFTER A FEW DAYS OF THIS, SHE STOPPED DRESSING ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
