Yes, a strange topic, but one I've spent much time thinking about. Ever wonder about the brain and having a stroke? Just what gets us to where we are? Our own set of "W's". Why - well this in most cases is obvious. When, well this can be explained in many instances but the "w" that has me thinking is WHERE. Not the "Where" in location such as home, work, car, but "where" in location of the brain. "What" decides where in the brain you have the stroke? Ever think of that? Why do some have brainstem stroke, some in the cerebellum, some in area that gives aphasia etc.? I guess to me it's a thought because where depends on everything, such as how badly you may be affected, whether you will be able to recuperate quickly and to what extent. Fate - yes it's a crap shoot, isn't it?

Phyllis,

It sure is a crap shoot, and the only way to deal with it, is to keep on keeping on with what you've got left.

Pam

PS... I may blog on this further.........

Good Blog Phyllis, yes life ...

some of us have strokes and all have different types, and recoveries. I have thought that maybe each persons brain cells are alittle different as to what each cell's function is

remebering numbers, names, walking, etc..so it depends on which cells get injured as to what is damaged and how undamaged brain cells can re wire to take over functions.

Is it what we want most, or what we work on first in recovery?

Also how some people get cancer, lupus, heart attacks... you just live the best you can with what you get.

Life is a crap shoot..

Where is in all cases, the weakest link when pressure is applied. Something has to let go, release its grip, that's how our immune system operate.

How much we are affected depends on that zones' strength. Some strokes are not detected by doctors immediately, the normal signs or systems don't show up on the radar screen.

Some humans get AIDS, live long time, while others die shortly after their contact. We need more research done on strokes and primary causes. Otherwise we all end up taking BP, and Cholesterol meds the rest of our lives, cause that's what they think caused our stroke.

with things like strokes and other health conditions it's a combination of genetics plus intrauterine environment plus family environment after birth plus birth order plus childhood experiences plus education plus a whole lot of other things including luck.

as an example, one recent neuropsychological theory states that the type of attachment that you have to your primary caregiver during the first two years of life determines whether or not you have a normal structural anatomy in your brain. my husband John had a very chaotic childhood with an extremely unstable, physically abusive mother, grew up to an alcoholic by his early teens and a drug addict by his late teens, and straightened himself out in his early forties (although he always worked and has had the same job for 28 years.) my childhood was a lot more benign, my main addiction is to caffeine, and i am a successful professional. my brain injury was much greater than John's but in a different area, plus i have a chronic autoimmune disease (actually 2) and he has none. his level of disability at one year is far greater than mine was at one year. (he was not cognitively disabled before his brain injury.) is that the result of a combination of a different brain area injured plus a different baseline education plus a different brain anatomy due to early childhood experiences plus addiction versus lack of addiction? it's an interesting question...maybe i'll blog about it
