This damn knee!

My knee hyper-extends when walking, so my therapist has strapped my knee to try and stop it. It is very uncomfortable but I will persevere in the hope that it helps my walking. When you hear of someone having had a stroke, you don't realise just what goes into the recovery process. Re-learning to use a knife and fork again is proving to be a bit more difficult than I first imagined it, as is walking.

Perseverance is failing the first 19 times and succeeding on the 20th. Here's to walking a bit better beer.gif (I hope!)

Hey Vix!

I don't if this is right for you, but Patricks therapist said his AFO brace was to help with that. If the strap hurts, maybe you could see about getting the brace. I know he didn't enjoy the fact that he was wearing the brace, but he never complained of it being uncomfortable, and it did it's job well.

Just a thought

I've had 2 AFOs, theyt are suppposed to keep your knee from hyper-extending BUT mine still hyper-extends. I've wrapped my knee in ace bandage, but then I'm so stiff legged I'm not walking correctly. My therapist insists its a matter of exercise & strengthening the hip muscles.

I've been off therapy for awhile & tomorrow I return; she'll have a fit when she sees how out of shape I am.

I have thought about a stationary bike - seems that would strengthen leg muscles.

At first after my stroke, I was keenly aware my knee hyper extended. I told doctor who sent me to be fitted for a brace, it didn't work and was extremely uncomfortable. So, I tossed it aside and concentrated on keeping that knee 'in line'. Leg exercises worked for me...bicycle. incline squats, swimming, lay on stomach and attach weight to ankle and raise/lower leg 3 sets of 10 reps.
