Midnight at the ER

Yesterday, Thursday, Thanks giving, Joe's sister had a meal at her place, with her son, daughter-in-law, their 2 kids, Jesse, Jill and myself; Joe didn't feel well enough to go there. He'd gotten up at 3am with nausea and took a pill at 4am... All day long he felt lousy....(nausea and pain) and he spent the day on the sofa. The only thing he had to eat was 3/4 a bottle of Ensure Plus and a few sips of water. Around midnight, Joe agreed to go to the hospital, he called the doctor's office to get the ok to go to ER,because for the health insurance we have we have to go through proceedure. About 12:30 the doctor called back..it just so happpened it was Dr Kamainova...the chemo doctor. I drove Joe over to Allen Hospital and they checked his vitals and hooked him up to IV as he was dehydrated. The ER doctor came in and okayed for Joe to get an anti-nausea shot and morphine for the pain. Both seemed to work right away. They left Joe hooked up to the IV to keep pumping fluid into him. Doctor came back in, meanwhile they'd taken blood sample and had an xray to see if he had some sort of bowel blockage. Nothing.

So, when they asked how he'd rate the pain, he said about a 3 after the morphine, and he said it had been a 7 before, Joe said it felt like there were 1,000 razor blades cutting up his intestines. yikes! yikes.gif that's pain!

Doctor said he didn't see any reason to keep Joe in the hospital, but he wanted one more test...urine to see if there was a urinary infection. Nothing!

Joe was concerned about leaving the hospital and getting home to only have pain again. Doctor gave him another set of shots just before he was discharged. Doc prescribed a suppository for nausea for future use. He said that Joe needed to stay ahead of the nausea, that it's hard to get rid of the nausea once you have it and the suppository gives the fastest delivery of nausea med.

It was 4:30am when he was discharged and I drove us home. Jesse and Jill had been at home all the while so they didn't lose sleep, Joe caught a nap once the morphine hit, but I could barely keep my eyes open.

Needless to say it was a long night I hope we don't repeat again.

Joe had his chemo on Wednesday this week so Joe is certain it is the chemo causing nausea and pain.

Not sure what time Joe got up this morning, but I slept till 1pm...I'm still a little foggy.

Joe seems good for the most part today, not jumping around energetic or anything, but good.

Hi,

Sorry about your tragic night in emergency.

I am a nurse and also a survivor.

When reading your blog I thought about a drug called Zofran that can be

precribed to prevent nausea for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

You could request a precription from your husband's Dr as i have woked with

cancer patients for a no. of years and found it to be of benefit to prevent nausea in chemotherapy patients. Just a suggestion!

Take care
