"You can have anything you want -- if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, do anything you set out to accomplish if you hold to that desire with singleness of purpose." ~ Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln On this day in 1849, at the age of 40, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) applied for U.S. Patent No. 6469, which raised steamboats off sandbars. He is the only U.S. President to obtain a patent, a credit to his determination and ingenuity

We had a few American river boat captains in Australia, came from the gold fields there, to the gold fields here in the 1850's and finished up pilotting boats on the Mighty Murray - Darling River system.

Hope they had Abe Lincoln's device with them as the sandbars changed overnight as the Murray rose to great heights after floods and fell again.

Thanks for the history lesson.

Sue.

Mel,

I wonder if they used Lincolns device to get the Ceasars casino off a sand bar in the Ohio River a few years back?
