IT'S SCARY HAVING A SEIZURE...

Last Friday evening I had a full-blown seizure, and it sure was scary. The seizure lasted about 5 minutes. I don't remember it happening. When I came to the ambulance was there.

I'm on medicine for seizures (Dilantin). I was transported via ambulance wondering what was going on. The doctors said my Dilantin level was too low (only 3.4), and it should have been 30% in my system.

I was taking the medicine as directed, therefore I got really scared. For some reason my body was metabolizing the Dilantin too fast. My doctor is monitoring my levels and so far its under control.

I'd like to warn everyone out there so you can prevent seizures. My doctor asked me if I was around people who smoked. I have never smoked (can't stand the smell). I'm frequently around family and friends who smoke.

He warned me of the dangers of smoke "it can trigger a seizure". My husband respects me and smokes in the garage, thank goodness...

The dangers of secondhand smoke are clear. Let this be a reminder for everyone, just not myself.

I hope this information helps everone out there...... :oohlala:

My husband takes Dilantin too and even though his levels were where they were supposed to be he had 4 total seizures within about a 4 month period until they put him on another medication called Lamictal. So he takes both now and has not had another seizure.

The last one was Jan. 2005 and the weird thing was after the last seizure he got a lot better with his speech, etc. The neurologist told me sometimes it triggers something in brain and that can happen (layman terms of course)!

Take care,

Cindy

We have a rule that no one smokes in our house. If a smoker comes they are welcome to take it to the yard. People don't seem to be offended anymore. :)

Ia, too have seizures [last one in 1987] & grandmal seizure are very scary, as not only can the patient get hurt, but most often there is no recollection of the occurrences -

GOOD LUCK
