I think you need to invest a waste basket the size of the garage bags so that the top of the bag can hang over the edges of the basket with the rest of the bag inside the basket.

As for sweeping single-handedly here's what the book, 'One-Handed in a Two Handed World' says: Leverage your boom against the shoulder of the hand you use, and maneuver the broom with your on hand. Rest the tip of the boomstick against your collarbone. Wrap the length of your arm along the broomstick so your forearm is on the top and your thumb and fingers close naturally around the boom stick. You'll find the broom sweeps better if you leave your index finger stretched long, on the top of the broom and draw it and the dirt on the floor toward you. Then sweep the dirt into a pile just like anyone else would. Brace the dustpan, tipping the handle end up with your foot. You'll find your success at getting everything into the dustpan quickly and more efficiently increases when you squat down and sweep the pile of floor dirt into the dustpan with a whisk brush."

Sounds like this might take some practice but it sure sounds possible to master the technique.

I have a dustpan that has a long handle it sits pretty flat on the floor. I also found a smaller sqaure rubbermaid garbage can that has a foot pedal to open it. The dust pan with the handle is eaiser and I sometimes push it up against a cupboard and then can sweep into it.

Those little rechargable dirt devils are great for little messes too. My daughter in law has one that is about the size of a broom, it has a plastic cup to get the dirt, so no bags to change. I am going to llok for one. She has all tile or laminate wood floors downstairs, 3 kids and a dog. I have used it at her house and it is pretty handy.

My suggestion is similar to Jean's. I'd put a carton in the cabinet with a garbage bag in it. I have a shredder which I love, but when I have to clean it out, and having had a cerebellar stroke, I sometimes miss the bag, so I put the bag in a small carton right near the table with the bag in it. It's better than trying to hold the bag open and dumping it in that way. The bag now stays open for the little shreds of paper - and the dog can no longer use it as a cushion after she kneads it into shape (and dumps shreds all over). Thank goodness for a hand vac.

You have to figure out what works best for you. Trying to get a cap on a pen is a fun time also (and also the wand from mascara). I learned to try to hit the side and then slide the item in. Heck, I can never find the tip of my nose so why should I expect to co-ordinate anything else. :roflmao: As I say, the cerebellum is a fun place.

Hefty makes a garbage bag thats called the Cinch Sack. It has a blue plastic strip that is woven through a seem at the top of the bag that serves as a handle when you are lifting the bag out of the can. They make them in tall kitchen can size so it wouldn't fit under the cupboard but if you had a bigger trash can then you wouldn't have to empty as often and these bags could probably be emptied with one hand. I use them myself. You would just have to grab the one loop then loop your hand through the other and lift. Hope they help if you get a chance to try them.
