We're Home

It's a sad thing. I've discovered that when I went on vacation, so did my brain. Either that or gremlins invaded the house while we were gone - and for a time I was totally convinced that had happened. Now though, it's Friday and we've been home since Monday. The house is getting back in order and my brain is too - I think.

I may have mentioned it before - Bill has been part of a class action law suit involving a medication he's needed for years. The first part of the suit is over now, however due to his strokes and disabilities we are part of the EIF - extraordinary injury fund. I received a phone call while were in St. Augustine that the law firm representing us wants all of the medical records substantiating his injuries. Unlike the first part of the suit, we need to request the records and forward them in a package. The cost is going to go into the hundreds of dollars I'm sure. Yesterday was spent determining who we should ask for records. The total count is 14 facilities/physicians. If they want documentation, documentation it is!!! We made it to six medical record departments yesterday to request records - it was almost funny to see the look of horror cross the faces when I told the people responsible the records were needed for legal purposes. I quickly added we weren't suing them!!!

Now, more about St Augustine. We did have a wonderful trip. Bill told him mom Wednesday that he wants to go to the mountains this summer. It is great to hear him WANT to plan (have me plan?) since he's always loved to travel. I think it seems to be giving him a little hope that had been lost in that he really CAN do some of the things he's loved. It also gives me some hope for some sort of normalcy - we don't HAVE to let the stroke win all the time.

We had rain Friday and Saturday, but that was ok - it made me "ready" to come home. The rain did make it a little more difficult to get around since the water made the gravel behind the B & B a little harder to maneuver. The girl who had told me the handicapped designated spot behind our building is bound to get a little more training. She told me that spot was really reserved for their company vehicle and we could certainly use it anytime for loading and unloading, but she just didn't want us to be inconvenienced by being asked to move when they needed the spot. By Thursday night she and I did have a few words. I finally told her I thought it interesting that their company vehicle was taking precidence over a paying customer. On Sunday I spoke with the manager and she was really apalled and very apologetic - didn't offer us any free nights in the future though... :(

We did take the train trip tour, but passed on the horse and carriage and the boat tours. I determined it would be just too difficult for Bill to climb into the carriage and the weather sort of turned bad late in the week. It was fine though, since we had such fun exploring the town.

Although we'd spent two nights out on the way down we were able to get home easily with one night out. I think I mentioned that Bill had an appointment about 50 miles south of here at 2:30 on the 23rd so we'd lost most of the travel time with that appointment.

I like Sue's idea of a vacation at home. I've heard of that before - in fact when my kids were small I'd take my vacation from work during a festival held annually where we lived and we'd take in the festival. It was a great way to feel like we were on vacation, but not have to spend all the money associated with travel!

So - brain's back - and all was well with our vacation!

Glad to have you back again and it's great to hear you had a good time. Thanks for the mid-vacation report you made, problems and all.

God, that would be a task to gather all those medical records! I was part of a class action suit involving a drug once but they didn't make me do all that. After several years me and thousands of others got a check for a whole $23.00. :)

Interesting about your run in w/the front desk staff.

We always appreciated it when our guests came to us during their stay and voiced their complaints. It gave us a chance to rectify the problem. Our main purpose for being there was to see to their comfort and to ensure their stay was a good experience. Our goal was to "exceed expectations." Sorry you had a bad experience w/ something that is so easily rectified. Take Care. LK

So glad to hear you two had a great time! It's ironic though how nice vacations are to be able to get away and yet we have that period of readjustment when we return home. Guess the brain takes a "longer" vacation lol.

Glad you got home safely. Guess you didn't make it to Paula's. Maybe another time or if you decide to do a vacation in Savannah. Did you ever speak to Dr. K. or did you just want info in case of emergency? Again, I apologize for the bad weather, The same thing has happened to the Bikers- cold and now beautiful (the reverse) I know though that their situation was worse, since they are riding in the cold (open air) no heater.

Guess my little one is ready for bed. She's sleeping on my arm - I'm tired as well. Guess this is it for blog reading tonight.

:welcome: BACK TO "BLOGLAND"!

Hi Phyllis,

No, we never did make contact with the good doc! The days just went along and we didn't really take the time to try to track him down. I'm so obsessive I probably would have become a hound dog so I decided to just relax for once!

The weather really didn't bother us - yes, it would have been nice for it to be like it was the day we were together all week, but we worked around the raindrops pretty well!

It was really great to meet you - I hope we can do it again!

Jean,

One interesting thing is that we got the records from his 1st stroke and I can now put a date on it - 2/22/02. It was described as "brain stem stroke, acute". It isn't my imagination that the left side of his mouth droops a little, and that was when it happened. Also, his left-side weakness that seems a little more pronounced now resulted from that stroke. Interesting - 1st stroke was 22nd of month, 2nd stroke was 25th of month and 3rd was 21st of the month. Pure coincidence I'm sure, but I found it pretty ironic!

We've gotten the requests for records delivered six places now. Got a call late yesterday afternoon from the neurologist that they hadn't gotten the power of attorney and can't do anything until they get that - so it'll be a little back tracking I guess! (I thought I'd already given them the health poa...but I guess I hadn't)

From the attorney's perspective the settlement from this would take care of any of Bill's needs for the rest of his life and beyond. A little footwork on our part will hopefully have a positive result! The first round they just wanted to establish that he had diabetes - now they want to establish the strokes, eye involvement and catestrophic damages - it really isn't all that hard!!!

All the gathering seems to be agreeing with Bill - it's giving him some focus on "doing" that I know he misses. He can't remember why we are going to a particular place and asks me where we are going so I tell him and he says 'oh, now I remember.' It's fun to seem him WANT to get up and go again!!

Ann,

Getting a way to cover Bill's needs in the future makes it well worth your time to the footwork. That's a lot of security you're looking at. Good luck to you!
