The winter through, near death and nursing homes pt 1
I have been asked to share what I have gone through since I last blogged last fall. In the hope that it will encourage another caregiver or survivor I will attempt to do so but it is a lot to put in one blog I have broken into to blogs but it is still a long tale to tell.
I was found last whining in my blogs last fall as the task of caring for my husband became an increasingly greater burden. His first strokes were 2 January 2005. He improved slowly, yet steadily for the first couple years. He went from being like a new born in abilities to speaking with some difficulties, walking without aid around the house and beginning to use his right arm. Then about 2 years ago I started seeing tiny changes and with the help of advice at StrokeNet I figured out that he was in the beginning stages of Vascular Dementia. I have been his sole caregiver most of the time.
While certainly not all stroke survivors end up with dementia, I am sorry that there is little information available for this disability and its prevalence among those with brain trauma. It is similar to its well known cousin Alzheimer
