Update

Last week mom was complaining of a pain in her groin area when she stood or sat down. The therapist noticed a change in her overall behavior, so they got an order for a urinalysis. That turned out to be negative. I was kind of hoping for a positive since that would have been a quick fix. She has also been incontinent alot more and doesn't even seem to know it some of the time. The weekend was ok, I go in at night on the weekends, so I can get some things done at home. Saturday night my grand-daughters went with me and they always make mom laugh. When I went in this morning, mom was congested - coughing, eyes watering, nose dripping. Her room-mate had a cold a couple of days ago, so I assume that is where she got it. She was miserable, didn't eat much for lunch, didn't want to walk. Today was her last day of therapy, but they just did a deep heat treatment on her neck. When I left they were getting an order from the doc for Mucinex.

Since she has been incontinent lately, I have had much more laundry to do. I think I had talked before about how I have found bm on the toilet seat I talked with the don about it and it was ok for awhile, but the other day, I went to put mom on and there was bm all over the seat. So I went to find the house keeper. Mom really had to go, so I took her to the visitors bathroom. Too late, she had already gone and her pull-up was saturated and her jeans were wet. So I had to leave her in the visitors bathroom to go to her room and get a pull-up and clean pants. There were no pull-ups in her closet! So I had to track down an aide to get a new pack for me. My husband had gone with me that day, so I put him watch in front of the BR door. I finally got mom clean and dry, but I was tired!!

Back to BM on the toilet. so today I was going to put her on and there was bm on the toilet bar. I got a paper towel and soap and scrubbed it off. Tomorrow I will buy a container of lysol wipes and take them with me. Today there were only 2 aides for 34 people. I know that they count everyone , therapists, office people , and others as help, but it's not enough. Very frustrating. I feel bad for the residents who don''t have family checking on them. They just fall through the cracks. It's too bad that the elderly are treated as though they are worth little.

It really wasn't a bad week, a couple of days mom and I worked on Christmas cards. She can write her name and that's about it. Sometimes she does something that looks like writing and I can even make out words, but it's not consistent.

Jhari I'm 60 overweight & had 2 babies - perfect risk factors for incontinence - thrown the stroke in & oops.

re: more incontinence recently. I've noticed a trend in myself - that if I am coming down with a viral infection- cold -- I seem to be worse for a few days. seems to improve again with the cold symptoms --- don't know if there is any medical credence to it . My doc said "maybe" as our bodies react & try to fight bugs in different ways.

Like I say, it holds trur for me. I get really frustrated I may have been handling/controlling it pretty well -- then for a few days several accidents per day- hope this is what's going on with your mom & it's just temporary& straightens out again soon very discouraging!

Jhari: Bruce struggles with incontinence, as you know, but we know it is overtoning. Once the medications were adjusted properly, it was totally on Bruce. With a lot of hard work, concentration and understanding that what he puts in he will put out, finally now, when he has a day with incontinence I know something is wrong, he is "off" somehow.

However Mom is on the other end, she is just beginning to learn what it is and that she somehow has to learn to control it. I have confidence, with her recovery so far, that she is making great strides forward. I do understand how difficult this is for her being in a facility. And I agree with Susan. Women have so many other factors to consider-lack of bladder tone just from child birth and aging, shorter distance (less time).

As to the facility, you are right on top of things. As exhausting as this is, you never know what you are walking into, you don't give up and for that you are to be commended. One thing I would suggest, however, is go to the housekeeper and ask for two containers of the wipes. Don't buy your own. They are going to give you some lip about patient safety, but assure them that you will not leave them in the room. Just leave one in your bag for your visits.

Thank you for the update. I do hope Mom's cold is resolving and that you don't get it. Good weekend, Debbie

Thanks Debbie. I did get the cold. Yesterday I didn't even go to the home. It's the 1st time I have missed a day. I was miserable. Mom started on an antibiotic on Wednesday. She was really not feeling well. When I went in on Wednesday, she was sleeping and slept until 11:45. They brought her lunch tray to her room. She felt a little better then, because she wanted to go to the bazaar they were having. We went and bought a few things. But then she wanted to lay back down.

My doctor called in an antibiotic for me last night and I just picked it up this afternoon. Mom was so much better today. She looked better and wasn't really congested at all. So hopefully things will keep improving there. As for me, I am going to take my medicine and cuddle up on the couch. Good weekend to you, too.
