I hate being disabled!!

Ugh,

Last night, I had a struggle, with the vacuum cleaner. I t was time to change the belt, and bag. It is almost impossible to do one-handed. Taking the brush bar off is easy, but putting it back, with a tight, new belt on, is hard. I could of asked for help, before my hubby went to work, but I have my pride, and would rather throw a cursing fit, doing it myself. After wrestling and increasing the tone in my left hand, I got the little whipper snapper on, turned on the vacuum, and realized I had the belt twisted. After re-doing it, and burning the rest of my patience out, I completed my task.

WEll, my stroke side is hurting, maybe it is a sign for bed.

AMY,

I FOUND OUT IT'S BETTER TO SWALLOW YOUR PRIDE SOMETIMES. I'M PRETTY FUNCTIONAL, BUT THERE ARE TIMES I'VE FOUND IT'S BETTER TO ASK OR JUST ACCEPT HELP. MY WIFE HAS UNDERTAKEN QUITE A BIT SINCE MY STROKE. IT SEEMS TO EASE HER MIND TOO IF SHE CAN HELP. IT BOTHERS ME THAT I CAN'T BE AS USEFUL AS I WAS, BUT I AM WHO I AM. SO BE IT.

It can be a pain asking for help, but sometimes it is necessary. But, I have enjoyed continually adding to my list of things I don't do anymore.

Mow the lawn

Move furniture (that is large)

Major cleaning

Cleaning up glass off the floor when I drop something and break it.

Pumping gas (although I have done it in an emergency)

Washing the car.

Doing most of the gardening

Sewing (I have sown on buttons, but the outcome was not pretty)

Laundry most of the time (our washer and dryer are in the basement so I have to put the clothes in a clothes bag and throw down the stairs)

Physical computer repair

Etc

I figure is it ok to give up doing some things.

Asha,

Thanks for your input on cleaning. That is something, that I used to enjoy. I now have the freedom of groceries, magically appearing in the fridge and cupboards every week. No more grocery shopping! I have done it post stroke though, I just got introuble for spending too much $$. I t wasn't my plan, but It has worked out to my advantage.

Dear Mrsamy,

Ihave had 2 strokes, one in 1987 when i was 44, i lost my entire right side, with work and rehab i was at speed about a year later.....not like i was before. Now 18years later i had another stroke in 2005. In this one i lost my abilityto swallow, part of my lungs, and general weakness of my entire body.about a month ago i was trying to put ths string in my weedeater and was quite like you i the frustration dept. i went from crying to laughing. A friend was over and heard me, and asked what was wrong.......Itold her that i was tired of working with the handicapped. We are never as good as before. Accepi what you are left with, dont take things too seriously, and enjoy what you can do. After 2 brainstem strokes i feel lucky to be alive. Iknow all strokes are different, someare much worse than others, just keepsmiling and things will get betterand enjoy life, best of luck.

Hoping things get better for You,

FGRobinson
