Memorial service an eye opener

My wife's uncle passed away this week we had a memorial service for him. During the visitation. I talked with Don achildhood neighbor of my wife and he asked how was doing. My standard response is " all things considered I'm doing well", he said I'll say so the last time I saw yoh, you were in a wheel chair, that was Christmas 2014. What a difference 20 months, hard work and stubbornness can make. I must remember those days and not take for granted any part of my life.   One of the songs we

I can't see Russia from my front yard but I can see canada

Watching the sunrise I can see the silhouette of the Canadian shoreline, a lone freighter is anchored off shore. I assume waiting for a master pilot to navigate the ship past Detroit to lake Erie and beyond. I see the last flicker of the street lights on the boardwalk bbidding farwell to the darkness replaced by sunlight. Once again I thank God for giving me my new lease on life, self examination, silence broken by fis jumping ng to snack on insects too close the the water's surface. Peace,

Laugh for the day

I am returning to my old bohemian hippie days, last night one of my younger daughters who never experienced dad has a hippie stop by the house and as she walked in she said why does this house smell like N, my oldest child when she was in high school she finally said Oh its patchouli oil. This morning I sent an email to my oldest daughter N in Chicago and explain that brief little story to her about her younger sister stopping by the house last night and I said either I smell like a teenage

Sharing joymultipies that jioy in the world

On Monday I called to talk to my OT the one that bumped into me with the wheelchair on Saturday but she was busy with patients so I got her voicemail so I left her a message explain to her how much I appreciated her sense of humor and the fact that she's one of the few people that can get away with that but she knows me so well and then I said I went from laughing my butt off to shutting the tears of joy when Joel said to me you give hold me when I saw her this afternoon on monday I called to ta

Giving is receiving

No two strokes are the same. I was stunned today when my newest friend and his daughter came into the day room, the the physical therapists came in to work with Joe. I asked his daughter to ask Joe if it was okay if I stayed to observe be said okay. He had his stroke two weeks ago, I was amazed to see him stand up and stay standing unaided. I admit I'm a little jealous, that he has met me and I'm giving him hope I can only imagine where I could be if I had met someone long before I did 9 mo

Wow what a day

I was in the dayroim waiting for any patient to come to play cards or board game or just talk.the gentleman I met Saturday was brought to the by his daughter again, today it was for physical therapy. The PT had him stand and sut in wheelchair working on balance. It did my soul good to see him do so well at these exercises. Of course it brought back memories of 20+ months ago when I was inpatient rehab, I mentioned that to the daughter it helped me realize how far I have really come. If cours

Did the rules change or is it a memory issue or lapse in judgement?

While eating my lunch before starting my volunteer work, one of my fellow volunteers stopped and asked if I was volunteering today. I said yes she said no blue jeans.now I have to admit, I don't recall being told that before, I've worsen jeans many times, this morning I considered wearing short pants but thought that wouldn't be appropriate,I think I showed some good judgement with that decision. They are not cutoff jeans, they are really nice shorts that are hemmed. I will remember to not we

God answers prayers

During my morning prayers I asked God to give me an opportunity to share hope with someone today. I was drinking coffee outside the coffee house and a buddy stopped by he is at 175 days sober. I shared with him my hope experience on Saturday he said you've inspired me to do some type of volunteer work you're giving me hope for my future, what a sweet thing to say.   I am so blessed and humbled by the friends I have made both pre and post stroke.   Peace, love, joy and prayers, Jsy

Lending a helping hand

As I've said, Sundays can be challenging. Not yesterday, my sister in law just bought a house, she asked if I would help her on Sunday there was a closet she needed torn out, destruction I'm your man. It was great to release some frustrations and help someone at the same time, she appreciated the help and I loved beating up on that old closet, a win win I highly recommend this activity within safety parameters, any physical activity even walking can help reduce stress.   Peace, love joy to

I shed a tear today of joy

I hung around an extra hour and net the patients wife , I gave her the cliff note version of my stroke and mentioned how the daughter said I gave her hope for her father. Then the patient even with speech issues from the stroke and English not hisfirst language he said as I shook his hand he said ," you give hope me " That was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I was totally humbled thanks be to God for bringing me to this moment. Peace, love, joy and prayers, Jay

Offering hope

While hanging out in the day room at the hospital waiting for any survivor that wants to play a game or talk, this attractive young lady came in with her father a survivor I would soon find out. I told my story as briefly as I could, rather hard for me I love to talk and talk about me.lol I mentioned my wife's comment that I needed to offer hope to someone's family because when I was in ICU my wife met a survivor and she gave hope to my family. I told the daughter I am available Tuesday, Thur

Words/tone make all the difference

I find it amazing how the same word can have two totally different meanings. The words" you did a wonderful job, we will miss you. Said with compassion and sincerity can. Bring a person to tears of joy. Those very words said with sarcasism can also bring someone to tear, not of joy but sadness. I am glad the young lady at my doc office was moved to tears of joy by my kind words, but how said that a simple heart felt thank you caused that response. I am sure the thank yous have been few and f

Random kindness pays dividends

A few weeks ago while on the bus a young lady said someone had given her a large amount of cash just to help out with the kids or whatever. I had an extra "thank you card" that I gave her to give to the person who helped her out, once she figured out who it was. Today on the bus she stopped me and said, I found out it was my neighbor and I gave him that card you gave, he loved the card and almost cried, and so did she, she said to me I cant thank you enough for the card because it made my neig
