Stroke Magazine

Wow just browsing and found the American Stroke Association Magazine called Stroke Connection which is free publication and I was so happy to browse through the online magazine. Lots of info. I feel good reading updated stuff issues and the personal stories. I often feel I do not have anyone around that understands stroke to teach me. In fact I am the one trying to get them to learn.   I got more PT hooray. I had a sub for one session and I walked on treadmill for second time. She toned it do

The Ombudsman Visited

She stayed a few minutes. She said the Dining room incident was all about providing the gentleman in the big wheelchair a place in the dining room. She said it was good that they reserved the table now to avoid any future problems. She suggested I get counseling. I upset her when I said she sounds like she works with them here. She denied it. I said my side again that the dining room is large enough to put two tables together anywhere and did not need the spot where i was sitting. I said the on

Send in the Clowns

A nice woman from the State came this morning to ask about our poor Roommate that does not eat. She came in our room, looked around. And what did she see? The newly frail woman Just flat in bed as usual. The room was dark because the window blinds were closed. She walked in alone when our cna was in another room helping the Woman across the way who keeps her tv on Loud all night, then wakes yelling "who turned off my tv" when a cna turns it off when she is asleep and no one else around here is. So

Today Thankful for Hope

Today I give thanks for Hope and the people around me who help me hold onto it with their love and kindness. Some are strangers come into my life briefly, but leave a huge power of positive energy that gives me healing.

She said Real Progress

I could not walk to my room after PT. During the short van ride I shut my eyes and music bombarded me out of the speakers. I longed for a nap. My head was "full", I felt nausea despite the meclazine I take. My leg burned with an intensity the meds could not douse.   But I had a big grin and a light heart. Today therapist said I made real progress. I walked at a snail pace on the treadmill today. Cans on the conveyor belt at a grocery check out surely travel faster than I.   Then I played ba

The Nurse Is On Break

So one may think that in a SNF (I personally detest the word sniff) you will be watched over, protected,by a clean kind medication bearing nurse. One that puts the nurse in sniff. She holds the power. She holds the medcart keys. But do not interrupt her pill line and expect service with a smile. I must ask for pain pills as needed for breakthrough pain from the rather ineffective but better than nothing fentanyl patch. I feel like Oliver asking for More. I have a knack for making my request when

I am a Crippled BadAss

The nursing home ran out of my gabbapentin. Some dr.insurance.pharmacy gliche that resulted in me making calls an then ultimately begging and pleading to go to the hospital. Then I walked out of my room and insisted. Only those with cps know the state I was in without a nerve drug. So off I went to the ER. When the ambulance man told admitting nurse why I was there,he said: did you call 911 and come to the emergency department for pain? Did I hear sarcasm? I said that is what the man said. And a

The State Investigators are here

I called the appropriate folks about our lack of a screen on our window. Our screen fell off and for months I requested one. We open the window when we need to air out this room and have fresh air. Roomie went nuts when it was open because flies came in. Moths would come in for the lights. Ok,so it just never was taken care of. So I called the state folks and told them about the blocked AC vent that was finally discovered and the screen problem. SO today they put in our screen. We are celebrati

Sweet Words Heal

The man from bingo who was sore looser, who was so obnoxious came by my room to say hello. He said it is not the same without me,that he hopes I will come back to play before he leaves in 2 weeks. He said there is a void without me.   That is so nice. I again am surprised at the imact on another person. I would have thought he was happy I was not there winning, but he said me and this other lady who is my buddy I sat with were like tag team. He must have liked the competition. He is going to VA

One Step Up And A Dozen Down

Last night and this morning my pain meds did not touch this. My am nurse saw my blood pressure was high, saw my agony and let me have a pill a bit early. She is so kind to me. My leg burned. The pain in turn made me feel light headed and it was hard to keep my balance for some reason dizzy and off the mark. My blood glucose was 61 this morning. So I ate breakfast, but lunch was gross so I ate peanut butter and graham crackers instead. I hurt too bad to think of food. The patch is a joke but norco

A Fabulous Friday the 13th

My son picked me up at 7pm and off we went to Mc Donald#s to devour a large fry and filet o fish sandwiches, washed down by diet dr.pepper. completely gourmet to a fast food starved nursing home inmate.   Then he took me shopping at my favorite store and I bought some ballet type flats for my disfigured feet swollen by meds and a new warm sweater.   Just being out in public was being alive. But the patterns made me dizzy, the large open spaces and all the things to look at, It made me dizzy,ve

I Got What I Was Told I Would Never Get

Today the guys delivered my deluxe thumb stabilizer. Hooray!! I did mental cartwheels!!   So the story is that my OT recommended this type of doodad for my hand, submitted it to my pcp,who passed it along for authorization by insurance. Insurance denied it but authorized another kind of doodad. This one cost $150 to the insurance compared to the other one that was about $20. I tried their only authorized one for me and it was too long, too rigid, too heavy, and very uncomfortable. I tried it when

I Talk to Everyone

When my girl was a teen, she rolled her eyes and said you talk to everyone. I did. Still do.I like people. So,here I am,in a hospital gown, not even my own clothes, bedhead hair, sitting watching a movie with Roomie, when a man from next room that I usually wave at, well he was in the doorway waving fingers. This time he lingered so I introduced myself and Roomie. Then I asked him all about himself after we talked about the relentless boredom here. For a few minutes we had a chance to be less al

Less Pain Makes The Difference

AsI walked through the beautiful high ceiling foyer of the hospital along with other people,I contemplated how I am changed, different, experiencing the world through dizziness, vertigo, visual things like reacting to patterns everywhere, responding to movements like people passing by seem so fast and close, and the constant ever changing Pain which dominates everything in my life now. I went for a blood draw and pondered over the fact that people never suspect how I am experiencing them, the room, the

Kindness is Powerful

A new friend from bingo came by to visit me in my room. She said she knew something was wrong. I asked her if she had heard what had happened to me. She said yes,sh heard that our mutual friend had driven me to tears. I said of course not!And my friend said she knew that did not sound right. I told her my story and she said that is ridiculous and that I will feel better after reporting it. She chatted about the receptionist from front desk --called bingo and made a mess of it. We shared a laugh

To Cleanse It All Away

I met with the Ombudsman this morning. She had received a report but apparently not my side of the story. She asked why did they want me to move. I said because those men always sat at the two tables put together by the fireplace. But they told not asked me to move even after they put 2 other tables together and they sat at them. The director said one man in big wheelchair needed 2 tables together and my reply was that was not the only place for 2 tables. I know bottom line was I could not be w

Bossy Nurse

Bossy Nurse Came in saying last night she had so many problems with patients and she was exhausted. I ignore her unprofessional chatter and all is well.   I passed up bingo today and a cna I cried on came in and told me that the lady I always sat with wanted me to come. I said I do not feel well. That is truth. The last hour of norco is difficult. I feel exhausted physically and mentally. Roomie and I are back to watching shows together and talking about our past lives.

Back to Norco

The fentanyl patch has not helped the way I hoped. This is med #3 that flopped. I called the pain doc and told her that the patch was not giving me good coverage during PT as much as methadone did. So the deal now is to continue the patch until my appointment in two weeks and use norco to rely on pain relief until then. I wonder if there is any hope that the patch will help. It seems it worked on the back a little better than this time on the area close to clavicle and shoulder. Maybe my imagin

Get Me Outta Here

They brought the wrong style and color of hand brace but it was the correct brand. They agreed to bring the correct one soon. Almost success. The supervisor from insurance called me. She said that my hand splint situation is rare. I bet it is. Few people will refuse to take no for an answer and will break down and buy their own or forget it.   And then the insurance wanted to know how long I will be here and promised to help me find a new home. I cannot say how thrilled I was to hear that.

I Am Told To Let It Go

Today the insurance company is delivering a hand brace that my OT recommended, but insurance refused to cover. I used the one they covered and it did not work out for me. I made lots of phone calls. I filed grievances. Was I right to fuss or not. All I know is it worked. It is being delivered today they tell me.   The nurse cart was in front of my room. I saw one of the men that claimed that table and had the staff's loyalty. When he saw me walk out of my bathroom, his eyes opened wide and h
